    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing a high-purity bromine compound in a short time by a compact and simple apparatus by continuously feeding a specific compound, a specific amount of bromine and a specific solvent to a reactor and removing reaction heat by a specific method. SOLUTION: (A) A compound having an aliphatic unsaturated bond of formula I [Ar and Ar are each a (halogen-substituted) 5-16C aromatic hydrocarbon or the like; Y is a 1-6C saturated hydrocarbon or the like; R and R are each a 2-11C hydrocarbon having aliphatic unsaturated group and in either one of R and R , a halogen may be added to a part of the unsaturated group], (B) bromine in an amount corresponding to number of 1-5 bromine molecules per unsaturated group in the component A and (C) a solvent which is inert to reaction are continuously fed to a reactor and reaction of the compound A with the compound B is carried out while removing substantial amount of reaction heat by vaporization heat of component B or A and the reaction mixture is taken to continuously provide the objective bromine compound of formula II (R and R are each a group in which unsaturated groups of R and R are saturated by bromine).

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply and economically obtain the subject polymer of highly halogenated styrene excellent in thermal stability in a high yield by using a reaction product between a Lewis acid and a nucleophilic substance as a polymerization catalyst in one reaction solution. SOLUTION: (A) unsaturated monomers comprising (i) 50-100wt.% of styrene monomer and (ii) 0-50wt.% of a monomer cationically copolymerizable with the styrene monomer are polymerized in the presence of (B) a catalyst and (C) the styrene polymer product is halogenated. In this case, (B) the polymerization catalyst is prepared by reaction of (iii) a Lewis acid represented by the formula [Me is a tri- or tetravalent metal atom; X is a halogen; R is H, a 1-6C alkyl, an aliphatic amine; a is 3, 4, (a-x)/x is 0-999] with (iv) a nucleophilic substance, used in an amount of 0.001-10 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. of the component A to effect cationic polymerization. Then, the resultant styrene polymer is halogenated using a Lewis acid as a halogenation catalyst in an amount of 0.01-20 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. of the styrene polymer.
