    • This invention is a method for ensuring for endovascular occlusion, aneurysms, vascular malformations, and arteriovenous fistulas. In particular, it deals with a method to predictably determine the instant of electrolytic detachment of an embolic device (104) which is introduced to and is intended to remain at the desired thrombus formation site. The invention further includes a method for delivering an embolic device (104) and detecting its electrolytic separation. According to the present invention, DC power with AC superposition (170) is delivered to the sacrificial link (106) that couples a delivery member (e.g., a guide wire) to an occlusion device. The impedance (as measured by the amplitude of the superposed AC) is monitored. When a predetermined change in that impedance (or amplitude) occurs, which indicates coil detachment, the DC power is interrupted to minimize or avoid further electrolysis.

    • This is a section of a catheter which self-forms a selected shape upon application of a modest amount of heat and retains that shape upon cooling and, indeed, upon any reheating. The catheter section includes in its wall a forming member which typically comprises a super-elastic alloy woven braid or at least one coil. The forming member may include other materials and components in addition to the super-elastic element of the forming member. The forming member is typically covered by at least an outer polymeric covering which holds the forming member in a first shape prior to the heating step. Upon softening of the outer layer during that heating step, the forming member self-forms into the desired second shape. The catheter section may be used either in its first shape or its second shape or in any transitional shape between the two. Often the inner lumen of the forming member may contain a second polymeric tubing member. The inner polymeric tubing member is often lubricious. The catheter sections made according to this invention may be used alone or in conjunction with other catheter sections. The more proximal sections of a catheter assembly using this concept are often substantially stiffer.

    • This invention is a medical device. It is a multipolar catheter assembly (100) optionally in combination with a guidewire (300). Each of the catheter (100) and the guidewire (300) may be sheathed and have multiple electrodes (114, 306) at their distal ends (102, 322). Because of their size and flexibility, the catheter (100) and the guidewire (300), may be used at virtually any point within the vasculature particularly, however, within the cardiac arteries or veins, perhaps in conjunction with external electrocardiogram leads, tomap the body's electrical activity. When used in the heart, they may be used to determine the source of cardiac arrythmia. The intimate presence of the guidewire (300) or catheter (100) body in the cardiac vasculature allows the response time to changes in cardiac electrical activity to be very quick. The invention is also a method for mapping the electrical activity of the heart by use of one or more of these inventive guidewires (300) or catheters (100) in the cardiac arteries or veins. They may also be used to determine the local electrical activity of any site within the body, such as in the brain.

    • This is a guide catheter assembly. The guide catheter assembly is used to cooperate with a micro-catheter in accessing a tissue target within the body, typically a target which is accessible through the vascular system. Central to the invention is the use of a braided metallic reinforcing member, situated within the catheter body in such a way to create a catheter section having an exceptionally thin wall, controlled stiffness, and high resistance to kinking. The catheter has a terminal segment which is not supported by a braid and the polymer making up that terminal segment is either the same hardness as is the polymer making up the outer covering of next more adjacent section or, preferably, the polymer is harder than is the polymer making up the segment located just proximally of that terminal segment. The braid may have a single pitch or may vary in pitch along the axis of the catheter or catheter section. The braided reinforcing member typically is embedded in a flexible outer tubing member. An inner tubing member is lubricious.
