    • This is a guide catheter assembly. The guide catheter assembly is used to cooperate with a micro-catheter in accessing a tissue target within the body, typically a target which is accessible through the vascular system. Central to the invention is the use of a braided metallic reinforcing member, situated within the catheter body in such a way to create a catheter section having an exceptionally thin wall, controlled stiffness, and high resistance to kinking. The catheter has a terminal segment which is not supported by a braid and the polymer making up that terminal segment is either the same hardness as is the polymer making up the outer covering of next more adjacent section or, preferably, the polymer is harder than is the polymer making up the segment located just proximally of that terminal segment. The braid may have a single pitch or may vary in pitch along the axis of the catheter or catheter section. The braided reinforcing member typically is embedded in a flexible outer tubing member. An inner tubing member is lubricious.

    • This invention is a surgical instrument, and specifically is a device for delivering embolic coils (102) to a selected site within the vasculature of the human body. The instrument uses, and may include, a catheter (110) used to place the embolic coil. In particular, the device is comprised of a pusher wire (108) having a distal tip (106) which is configured to engage the proximal end of the embolic coil (102). The device may also include a cylindrical pusher (112) which coaxially surrounds at least a portion of the pusher wire and cooperates in the disengagement of the coil from the pusher wire and the ejection of the vasoocclusive coil into the selected vascular site. The pusher wire's engagement tip (106) may be of any selected and convenient shape and may be grooved, if so desired, to enhance the engagement joint strength.

    • This invention is a single lumen balloon catheter (100) having a valve seat (124) on the distal end of the catheter, distal of the balloon (112), which may be operated by a control wire (102) having a valve plug (104) disposed on the wire. The valve seat (106) may be engaged by the valve plug (104) from either direction, depending on the installation of the control wire (102). In either event, if the valve plug (104) is installed distally of the valve seat (124) in the catheter lumen, the valve (106) is closed by pulling on the control wire (102) (or moving the control wire (102) in a proximal direction) and introducing fluid through the catheter lumen through the balloon (112). Alternatively, the guide wire (102), with its integral valve plug (104) may be introduced from the proximal end of the catheter (100) and may traverse the body of the balloon (112) to engage the valve seat (122) in the distal end of the catheter (100). Pushing on the control wire (102) will seat the valve, allowing fluid to inflate the balloon (112).
