    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove a catalyst from a high-molecular weight lactic acid polymer to thereby obtain a lactic acid polymer having high safety and scarcely undergoing thermal decomposition and thermal deterioration, by treating the polymer by immersing in a solution comprising a mixture of a specified organic solvent and an organic acid. SOLUTION: A lactic acid polymer having a viscosity-average molecular weight of at least 100,000 is treated by immersing in a solution comprising a mixture of an organic solvent and an organic acid. Satisfactory organic solvents used comprise those which are miscible with the acid and do not dissolve the polymer, and the examples thereof include esters such as methyl and ethyl acetates, ketones such as acetone and methyl ethyl ketone, and alcohols such as methanol and ethanol, among which ethyl acetate and actone are preferable in particular. Examples of the acid to be mixed with the organic solvent include monofunctional or polyfunctional organic acids, such as lactic, acetic and citric acids, among which lactic acid is preferable in particular. It is desirable that the weight ratio of the organic solvent to the organic acid in the mixture is (50 to 95):(50 to 5). The immersion time is about 5-24hr.
