    • A system and method for capturing hand-marked cells from a lottery selection slip. The lottery slip includes a conventional play region of cells (labelled sequentially from 1 to 49, for example) for receiving indicia to be captured, after receiving indicia said play region of cells includes a plurality of occupied cells defined by marked cells and a plurality of non-occupied cells defined by unmarked cells. The lottery slip also includes row-identifier bar codes located at opposite boundaries of the play region. The bar codes are electro-optically scannable and readable and are arranged in a plurality of ordered rows tiered along the transverse direction over the transverse distance of the play region. A scanner is used to generate scan lines that extend over the play region of cells occupied by the indicia and over each bar code and for decoding the row identifer data for each scan line as each line transverses the boundaries of the play region of cells, the occupied cells having different light reflectivity than the non-occupied cells. A decoder captures the identity and the location of the occupied cells and the non-occupied cells and stores the digitized signal. A ticket receipt is then issued representative of the numbers selected by the player. By using a bar code scanner to read both the row identifier codes and the actual hand-marked play region the need for precise positioning within traditional terminals is obviated.

    • An interface between a two-dimensional bar code scanner and a host digital decoder is provided through a 15-pin electronic connector, which transfers to the decoder an actuating signal either from a scanner trigger switch or from an external device. In response, the digital decoder provides the scanner with operating power. The scanner generates and relays a bar code signal and a scanning direction signal back to the digital decoder, which uses these signals to identify a bar code being scanned as a one-dimensional or two-dimensional code. If the bar code is determined to be a two-dimensional code, upon detection of laser pattern alignment with the label the digital decoder sends a scanning control signal to the scanner to control a laser pattern generated by the scanner.

    • A lightweight, easy to grasp and manipulate hand-held optical scanning device for scanning and digitizing image data from a two-dimensional bar code symbol for subsequent decoding in a personal computer platform. The scanning device achieves a small footprint in the user's workspace by utilizing a non-folded, substantially vertical optical path extending from an image viewing area upwardly to a linear charge-coupled device (CCD) array upon which the successive rows of the target two-dimensional bar code symbol are imaged. The scanning device is easily aligned with the symbol by placing it behind the symbol, and scanning of the successive rows of the symbol is accomplished by swiping or rolling the scanning device towards the user. Mechanical rollers on the underside of the scanning device provide translation information for use in clocking data out of the linear CCD array in order to scan the successive rows of the two-dimensional bar code symbol. The operating environment of the computer allows scanning to be initiated by the user without having to use the keyboard or mouse peripheral. As the two-dimensional bar code symbol is being scanned, digitized image data is automatically and in real time ported to a symbol decoding application running in the background, and decoded data from the decoding application is ported into the application the user is running in the foreground. A trackball and a pair of select buttons are optionally provided on the scanning device for mouse emulation, thereby eliminating the need for a separate mouse peripheral device.
