    • One embodiment is directed to a method and apparatus for modifying a configuration of a computer system including a host computer and at least one computer system resource accessible to at least one application program executing on the host computer. The computer system is dynamically reconfigured, without reinitializing the host computer or the application program, to alter a manner in which the at least one application program accesses the at least one computer system resource. Another embodiment is directed to a method and apparatus for responding to changes in a configuration of the computer system impacting a manner in which the at least one computer system resource is accessed by the host computer. Information relating to a first configuration of the computer system at a first point in time is stored, the first configuration relating to a first manner of accessing the at least one computer system resource by the host computer. A second configuration of the computer system at a second point in time is determined, the second configuration relating to a second manner of accessing the at least one computer system resource by the host computer. The second configuration of the computer system is compared with the first configuration to determine whether the second configuration differs from the first configuration. When it is determined that the second configuration differs from the first configuration, the second manner of accessing the at least one computer system resource by the host computer is determined.

A method of propagating a digital asset identification tag associated with a digital asset includes: receiving a command from a client of the distributed computing system to the central computing resource, the command comprising an indication that a change occurred to the asset identification tag of a digital asset and the changed digital asset identification tag; locating the digital asset identification tag at the central resource; updating the digital asset identification tag in response to the received command; and transmitting the updated tag to another client having a copy of the digital asset.

A method of displaying digital asset of a distributed computing system according to an organization specified by the end-user of a client includes: receiving an organization semantic having at least one depth level from an end-user of the client, the organization semantic specifying at least one attribute of a digital asset identification tag; and displaying, to the end-user of the client, on a virtual computing element the digital assets of the distributed computing system that substantially match the organization semantic defined by the end-user, without reference to a pre-existing organizational hierarchy of the distributed computing environment.

A risk-based method for storing digital assets in a distributed digital asset management environment includes: receiving, by a server from a client, an asset identification tag associated with a digital asset stored on the client; identifying a risk-management policy corresponding to the client and the digital asset; and transmitting, in response to the risk-management policy, a command to transfer the digital asset to the server. The server may then store the digital asset, and the client may delete the digital asset. Corresponding systems and computer readable media are also described.
