    • A method and apparatus for control of concurrent communication of analog information and digital information. In general terms, when the communication channel is viewed as a multi-dimensional space, the digital information signal is divided into symbols, and the symbols are mapped onto the signal space with a preset distance between them. The analog signal, generally limited in magnitude to less than half the distance separating the symbols, is converted to component signals and added (i.e., vector addition) to the symbols. The sum signal is then transmitted to the receiver where the symbols are detected and subtracted from the received signal to yield the analog signal components. The transmitted analog signal is recreated from those components. Both half-duplex and full-duplex operation is available in accordance with this invention. The illustrative embodiment includes a controller that is sensitive to input signals applied to the modem disclosed herein. To wit, the control is sensitive to signals from the analog port, signals from the digital port, and signals from the port that carries the combined digital and analog signals. Operation of the near-end modem is controlled as well as operation of the far-end modem.

    • An adaptive voice and data bandwidth management system is implemented in a subscriber loop to permit higher data rates and adaptive allocation of this increased capacity between multiple applications. The management system communicates digital data across multiple-lines when these lines are not in use by other communication equipment. However, when a request for use of a line by another device is detected, a modem clears down a subscriber line and connects the subscriber line to the appropriate communication device. As a result, simultaneous use of a modem and other communication devices is allowed. Once the other communication device ends its communication session, the system adapts to once again communicate digital data over multiple lines in order to increase the speed and efficiency of the data communication.

    • A multiple line modem and method enable a user to automatically usurp a plurality of telephone lines for data transfer when the telephone is not in use and the ability to switch from multiple line data operation to one (or more) line data and one (or more) line telephone operation automatically when the telephone handset is lifted or an incoming call is detected signaling a request for voice service. The multiple line modem will automatically reestablish the data connection on the line(s) that was used for voice service when the voice service terminates. The multiple line modem allows end to end service that is transparent to the central office. When all lines are operating in data transfer mode, the aggregate data transfer rate is multiplied by the number of lines available for data transport. When one line(s) is operating in voice service mode, the other line(s) maintains data transfer operation at a reduced rate. The line(s) that is used for voice service is adaptively managed by the multiple line modem to provide seamless switching between data transfer mode operation when voice service is not requested and voice service mode operation when voice service is requested.

    • A manually-operated press is provided in which old newspapers in a folded condition may be stacked, pressed into a compact bundle, and then bound into a bale, by appropriate metal binding straps, or the like, and then sold to waste paper collectors. The press comprises a compression box having a fixed bottom and a movable top, and it also has an open front through which newspapers may be stacked in the compression box. A lever-like handle is coupled to the moveable top of the compression box through a linkage system. The mechanical advantage of the linkage system is a function of the handle angle, and is non-linear. At the beginning of the downward stroke of the handle, the mechanical advantage of the linkage is a minimum and is just sufficient to cause the air to be squeezed out of the stack of newspapers placed in the compression box as the handle is lowered. As the handle is further lowered, the mechanical advantage of the linkage system increases as the linkage arms of the system turn and approach the vertical position. A stop is provided just past dead center of the linkage system, at which position the top of the compression box locks the bale of newspapers in the compression box under pressure. Slots are provided in the top and bottom of the compression box to facilitate strapping of the bale. After strapping, the handle is lifted and the bale is removed. A small latch pin holds the press open for loading purposes.

    • A simultaneous voice and data (SVD) modem includes two analog ports and a data terminal port. Both of these analog ports are capable of transmitting telephone numbers and are coupled to a switching system like a private branch exchange (PBX). The data terminal port is coupled to a data terminal of an SVD user. In one embodiment of the invention, the SVD user, the calling party, sends at least one command to the SVD modem, via the data terminal port. In response, the SVD modem separately transmits, to the PBX, the calling party number from one of the analog ports and the called party number from the remaining analog port. The SVD modem then subsequently communicates any voice signals received on one of the analog ports to the other analog port. This allows a voice call to be switched through the SVD modem, yet requires no modification to the PBX.

    • A sealing and venting system including an improved piston is for a drill assembly. The drill assembly includes a fluid distributor within the casing with an elongated guide portion having an outer surface, a passage through the guide portion and a port between the outer surface and the passage. The improved piston is slidable within the casing and has an interior surface disposeable about the outer surface of the guide portion. A valve chamber, an exhaust chamber and a drive chamber are defined within the casing. The system includes a sealing surface disposed within the piston passage and slidably engageable with the outer surface of the guide portion to provide a seal between the piston and the distributor. The sealing surface prevents fluid communication between the drive chamber and the exhaust chamber when the sealing surface engages the outer surface of the guide portion, and is provided by an interior surface section of the piston body or by a separate ring seal. Further, an exhaust passage is defined by sections of the interior surface of the piston and of the outer surface of the guide portion when the guide portion is disposed within the piston passage, the passage extending between the sealing surface and the second end of the piston. The exhaust passage establishes fluid communication between the valve chamber and the exhaust chamber through the distributor and piston passages when the sealing surface engages the outer surface of the guide portion on one side of the distributor port.
