    • The present invention provides a hot cathode discharge lamp comprising an electrode that has a filament coil, a first and a second connection-reinforcing members (5a) and (5b), a first and a second lead-in wires (6a) and (6b), the filament coil including: a coil part (4a); a first lead wire (4b) connected to the first lead-in wire (6a) via the first connection-reinforcing member (5a); and a second lead wire (4c) connected to the second lead-in wire (6b) via the second connection-reinforcing member (5b), wherein a first plane of the first connection-reinforcing member (6a) and a second plane of the second connection-reinforcing member (6b) intersect with each other. According to this structure, the filament is more resistant to swinging and is more stably fixed than the filaments of the conventional lamps, even if the filament is extended in the direction of the tube axis in order to extend the lamp life.

    • A hot-cathode fluorescent lamp includes a pair of filament coils (4) at the respective ends of a glass bulb. Each filament coil (4) has a coiled portion (4a) coated with an electron emissive material, a first lead portion (4b) extending from one end of the coiled portion (4a), and a second lead portion (4c) extending from another end of the coiled portion (4a). The first lead portion (4b) and the second lead portion (4c) are connected to lead-in wires inserted into the glass bulb via connecting members (5a, 5b). At least one insulating member (11a or 11b) is provided between closest edges of the connecting members (5a, 5b) to each other. The provision of the insulating member prevents a short circuit occurring between the closest edges of the plate-shaped connecting members during lighting. Occurrence of such a short circuit would cause lighting to start without the coil portion being sufficiently pre-heated, which results in excessive sputtering of the electron emissive material to shorten the lamp life.

At least a region of the inner circumferential surface of the sleeve is electrically insulating.     • A light source device includes a discharge tube, a discharge medium sealed inside the discharge tube, and inner and outer electrodes for exciting the discharge medium. The inner electrode is arranged inside the discharge tube. The outer electrode includes a first outer electrode and a second outer electrode that are connected electrically with each other. The first outer electrode is in contact with an outer surface of the discharge tube at a plurality of first contact portions that are located at different distances from the inner electrode and are provided discontinuously. The second outer electrode is in contact with the outer surface of the discharge tube at second contact portions. The second contact portions are arranged closer to the inner electrode than the first contact portions at a surface density greater than that of the first contact portions. Thus, it is possible to provide a light source device with decreased fluctuations in the brightness distribution and with higher brightness, and a liquid crystal display device in which the light source device is employed.

    • A light source device includes at least one discharge tube, a discharge medium sealed inside the discharge tube, and first and second electrodes for exciting the discharge medium. The first electrode is arranged inside or outside the discharge tube, and the second electrode has a plurality of contact portions at which the second electrode is in contact with an outer surface of the discharge tube. The contact portions are located at different distances from the first electrode and are provided discontinuously. Xenon gas and at least one selected from argon gas and krypton gas are sealed in the discharge tube, in which the xenon gas accounts for 60 vol % to 80 vol %. Thus, it is possible to provide a light source device and a liquid crystal display device that provide light emission with high brightness and excellent brightness distribution and that can be manufactured readily.

    • A discharge lamp device is provided that includes a light source device including a reflective surface. In the light source, noble gas not including mercury is excited to provide stable light emission and ozone or the like is prevented from being generated. This discharge lamp device includes airtight container (10) in which both end sections of a glass bulb are sealed. Airtight container (10) is filled with a discharge medium mainly including noble gas. One end section of airtight container (10) includes first electrode (11). Airtight container (10) is externally attached to insulating holder (20) having a square plate-like shape that includes penetration hole(s) (21) at one or a plurality of position(s). Holder (20) is fitted to second electrode (12) shaped to be a U-like groove so that a fixed interval between airtight container (10) and second electrode (12) is maintained. Three side faces (22) of holder (20) include protrusion (23) and second electrode (12) includes fitting hole (15) fitted with protrusion (23). By fitting protrusion (23) with fitting hole (15), holder (20) is prevented from disengaged from second electrode (12).
