摘要： A video frame is input to a spectrum analyzer, which transforms the frame from a spatial domain into a frequency domain. A resolution determiner analyzes the output of the spectrum analyzer, thereby selecting a resolution appropriate for the video frame. Then, a resolution converter converts a resolution of the video frame into the resolution selected by the resolution determiner. Thereafter, the video frame is subjected to a coding process by block divider, DCT transformer, quantizer and variable-length coder so as to be output as a coded bit stream. By coding the input video frame at a resolution corresponding to the high-frequency component in the frame, a video of higher quality can be obtained with the bit rate reduced.

摘要： A digital recording apparatus that obtains a digital stream including a plurality of frames, while recording the digital stream on a digital recording medium. This apparatus obtains, during recording, an instruction for a procedure in which a recording area is changed to another recording area which is not necessarily continuos with the recording area. When the instruction is obtained, the apparatus executes the procedure only when the number of frames which are recorded in the recording area is a predetermined number or more.

摘要： A cumulative error D is calculated by sequentially adding up errors, each representing a difference between a given average target number Ba and a number Bg of bits generated during every predetermined period of a coded bit stream. In determining a number Bt of bits allocated to a compression coder, a provisionally allocated bit number Bst is preset based on a coding complexity X such that a number of bits allocated to a scene with a high coding complexity exceeds the average target number Ba as for a frame just after the change of scenes. And if the cumulative error D exceeds a predetermined value, the provisionally allocated bit number Bst is corrected in accordance with the magnitude of the cumulative error D so as to be reducible to, but not less than, the average target number Ba. As for frames within the same scene on the other hand, a previously allocated bit number Bt is sequentially updated such that the cumulative error D does not exceed a predetermined maximum value Dmax. Accordingly, even if a series of scenes with high coding complexities X appear consecutively, a number Bt of bits allocated to each of these scenes can always be at least equal to the average target number Ba, while the total number of bits generated can also be regulated. As a result, high image quality is ensured.

摘要： A data recording medium by which, when encoding an externally input AV signal to an MPEG transport stream, the MPEG_TS can be quickly and efficiently converted to an MPEG program stream conforming to a DVD standard, is provided. An apparatus and method for recording to the data recording medium are also provided. A flag indicating that a first stream (such as an MPEG transport stream) is recorded in a constraint format enabling efficient conversion to a second stream (such as an MPEG program stream) is written to the management information (VOBI). By referencing this flag the recorder can easily determine if the recorded data was recorded in the specified constraint format without analyzing the data recorded to the data recording medium.
