    • A liquid crystal display device includes: a first substrate and a second substrate; a liquid crystal layer interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate, the liquid crystal layer comprising liquid crystal molecules having a negative dielectric anisotropy; a plurality of first convex members formed on the first substrate along a first direction; and a plurality of second convex members formed on the second substrate along a second direction which is different from the first direction, the plurality of first convex members partially overlapping the plurality of second convex members, the plurality of first convex members and the plurality of second convex members defining liquid crystal regions. Under an applied voltage, the liquid crystal molecules in each liquid crystal region are aligned in an axially symmetrical or radial orientation. In the absence of an applied voltage, the liquid crystal molecules in each liquid crystal region are aligned substantially perpendicularly to the first substrate and the second substrate.

The first sub-domain is formed between one of the two first regions and the third region, the second sub-domain is formed between the second region and the third region, the third sub-domain is formed between the second region and the fourth region, and the fourth sub-domain is formed between the other one of the two first regions and the fourth region.

    • VA-mode liquid crystal display device having a high display quality is provided. A liquid crystal display device according to the present invention includes a vertical alignment type liquid crystal layer; a first substrate and a second substrate facing each other with the liquid crystal layer interposed therebetween; a first electrode provided in the first substrate on the liquid crystal layer side and a second electrode provided in the second substrate on the liquid crystal layer side; and a first alignment film provided between the first electrode and the liquid crystal layer and a second alignment film provided between the second electrode and the liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal display device includes a plurality of pixel areas located in a matrix. Each of the plurality of pixel areas includes a first liquid crystal domain in which a tilt direction of liquid crystal molecules at the center and in the vicinity thereof in a layer plane and in a thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer when a voltage is applied between the first electrode and the second electrode is a predetermined first direction, a second liquid crystal domain in which such a tilt direction is a predetermined second direction, a third liquid crystal domain in which such a tilt direction is a predetermined third direction and a fourth liquid crystal domain in which such a tilt direction is a predetermined fourth direction; and a difference between any two among the first direction, the second direction, the third direction and the fourth direction is approximately equal to an integral multiple of 90°.

    • To provide a production method of a liquid crystal display device and a liquid crystal display device, in which generation of a joint line on a display screen is suppressed and yield can be improved even if a substrate is subjected to an alignment treatment by completing exposure for the substrate through several exposures in a liquid crystal display device including pixels each having two or more domains. The present invention is a production method of a production method of a liquid crystal display device, the liquid crystal display device including: a pair of opposed substrates; a liquid crystal layer formed between the pair of opposed substrates; and an alignment film arranged on a liquid crystal layer side surface of at least one of the pair of opposed substrates, and the liquid crystal display device having two or more regions which differ in alignment azimuth in a pixel, wherein the production method comprises an exposure step of exposing the alignment film in such a way that a substrate plane is divided into two or more exposure regions through a photomask in each exposure region, and in the exposure step, exposure is performed in such a way that adjacent two exposure regions have an overlapping exposure region where the adjacent two exposure regions partly overlap with each other, and the photomask has a halftone part corresponding to the overlapping exposure region.
