    • A smart card and a settlement terminal are provided by which, when common-key cryptography is used for value transfer between smart cards, the security of the whole system can be improved by enabling easy updating of a cryptographic key used for the value transfer. A smart card transmits/receives value data to/from another smart card. The smart card includes an information accumulating unit for accumulating value data, a transfer key used to update the value data, and an update key used to update the transfer key; a communication unit for receiving a transfer key encrypted by use of the update key, the transfer key being transmitted from another smart card; and an arithmetic processing unit for decrypting the encrypted transfer key by use of the update key to update the transfer key accumulated in the information accumulating unit by use of the decrypted transfer key.

    • In a data recording apparatus capable of recording data while varying the amount of data per unit of time (at a variable rate), the present invention makes it possible to indicate an allowable recording time period on a disc and operational information according to user-specified setup conditions and the remaining capacity of the disc when a user determines conditions for record programming. An allowable recording time period on the disc is calculated on the basis of the remaining capacity of the disc and at least one of the following parameters; a maximum variable-rate value, a minimum variable-rate value, and an average variable-rate value to enable recording video data in most cases. Then, the result of calculation is displayed on a screen. Further, according to user-specified setup conditions including a programmed recording time period and the calculated allowable recording period on the disc, it is determined whether a normal variable-rate recording operation is applicable or an adjusted variable-rate recording operation is required. The result of the determination is displayed on a screen which is so arranged that the user can select either the normal variable-rate recording operation or the adjusted variable-rate recording operation.

    • In an electronic tag data read/write apparatus, an electronic tag receives a response request from a reader/writer, generates a random number in a random number generator, stores the random number in a memory, and transmits the generated random number to the reader/writer. The reader/writer conducts masking processing on write data on the basis of the random number every size of the received random number, repeats the masking processing until all of the write data are subjected to masking processing, and then transmits the masked write data to the electronic tag collectively. The electronic tag conducts deciphering processing on the received masked write data every size of the random number stored in the memory, repeats the deciphering processing until all of the masked write data are deciphered, and writes the write data into the memory.
