    • A navigation device performs a route guidance based on a route from a current location to a destination. A communication controller sends a request for searching the route to a server. A guidance-information receiving unit receives information on the route from the server. A time measuring unit measures an elapsed time from a start of the route guidance. A guidance controller performs the route guidance based on the information received. The communication controller commands the navigation device to cut off a communication with the server and to stand by upon a determination that the elapsed time measured has reached a predetermined time and when the route is being guided or a current location is being checked by the guidance controller, to decrease a bandwidth usage between the navigation device and the server and to reduce a communication charge associated with the bandwidth usage.

    • A navigation device performs a route guidance based on a route from a current location to a destination, the navigation device being connected to a server for searching the route. A navigation method for the navigation device includes sending a request for searching the route to the server and receiving information on the route from the server. The method also includes measuring an elapsed time from a start of the route guidance, and performing the route guidance based on the information received. The method further includes cutting off a communication with the server and coming into a standby state, upon a determination that the elapsed time measured has reached a predetermined time and when the route is being guided or a current location is being checked, to decrease a bandwidth usage between the navigation device and the server and to reduce a communication charge associated with the bandwidth usage.

    • A navigation device having a function of dealing with a case where a navigation function cannot be executed at the same time as another function, such as a telephone function, because of constraints of the processing capability of a CPU or the memory capacity in a mobile telephone. A navigation device (10), which uses a mobile telephone having GPS means, comprises a navigation control module (123); a telephone communication control module (122) for telephone communicating with another mobile terminal device; and an operation control module (OS) (121) for controlling those modules. When detecting a particular event during operation of the navigation control module, the OS sends a suspension command to the navigation control module, thereby suspending the navigation control module. When detecting a termination of the particular event, the OS sends a resumption command to the navigation control module, thereby resuming the navigation control module.
