    • The present invention relates to a method for carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation for multicarrier communication systems. More particularly, but not limited to, the invention relates to CFO and timing estimation in communication systems that utilise multiple carriers to transmit signals. The multicarrier communication system has a large number of possible integer CFOs. First the received signal is auto-correlated (50) in the frequency domain to identify a set of most likely integer CFO values for further processing. Then the integer CFO is estimated (52) by using the channel impulse response on the set of most likely integer CFO values in the time domain to identify the value having the most energy concentrated within the first few temporal taps. The invention provides a two stage integer CFO estimation method that makes a trade off between performance and complexity. Aspects of the invention include a method, receiver, system and software.

    • The present disclosure relates generally to communication, and more specifically detection of a communication signal in a multiuser or multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) receiver of a communication system. A reliable signal subset (72) and a less reliable signal subset (74) of the communication signal (66) is identified using a reliability threshold test (50). Soft output detection (54) is performed on the less reliable signal subset (74) to produce a first output. Interference cancellation (52) is performed on the reliable signal subset (72), where the interference cancellation is less computationally complex than the soft output detection (54) performed on the less reliable signal subset (74). Then a soft output (56) of the communication signal (66) is determined for use by a channel decoder (42) based on the interference cancelled reliable signal subset and the first output.     • The invention concerns complexity management of a receiver in a multi-access/user communication system where interference exists. For example, but not limited to, multi-user detection at the receiver in the uplink of a code division multiple access DS/CDMA system. The invention provides a method for power management and decoding schedule optimisation by deriving (40) an extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) function for an interference canceller and a plurality of decoders. Then, determining (42) a power level for each of the plurality of users based on the derived EXIT functions; and then deriving (44) a decoding schedule for the plurality of decoders based on the derived EXIT functions and determined power levels. It is an advantage of the invention that optimization is broken into two parts. There is no trade-off between computational complexity (number of iterations) and the improvement in bit error rate performance at a given signal-to-noise ratio. Using the invention, large gains in receiver sensitivity (i.e. in power efficiency and/or spectrum efficiency therefore reducing interference from the terminals) and computational complexity can be achieved simultaneously.
