    • A comfort noise block, that include a hangover period and comfort noise parameters, is transmitted in such a manner that it is not interrupted by other messages, such as FACCH messages. This is accomplished in a mobile station by a determination of whether any FACCH messages are required to be transmitted. If such FACCH messages exist, a further determination may be made as to which transmission can be made in the shortest time (i.e., the FACCH message or messages or the comfort noise parameters message), and this transmission is made first. In any event the comfort noise parameters block is transmitted without interruption. In a further embodiment of this invention the comfort noise parameters message is transmitted by being concatenated with another message, such as a neighbor channel measurement results message, so as to reduce overhead, conserve bandwidth, and reduce power consumption. An element of the comfort noise parameters message is a Random Excitation Spectral Control (RESC) information element, which is used in the decoder for improving the spectral content of the generated comfort noise so as to better match the background noise at the transmitter.

    • A method of this invention operates a mobile station, such as a cellular radiotelephone, of a type that is bidirectionally coupled to a system through an RF interface. The method includes a first step of receiving a first portion of a message word from an analog control channel (ACC); determining from the received first portion if the message word is a predetermined type of message word; and, if the message word is determined to be the predetermined type of message word, terminating the reception of the message word so as not to receive a second portion of the message word, thereby reducing the power consumption of the mobile station. In the preferred embodiment of this invention the predetermined type of message word is a control-filler message, and the second portion of the message word is comprised of a parity bits portion. The step of determining includes a step of comparing less than a total number of bits (e.g., 18 bits) of the received first portion of the message word, or all of the bits (28 bits), to a set of bits that are known to uniquely identify the predetermined type of message word. The method may include a step of periodically updating the set of bits, such as when the mobile station enters a new paging ACC.

    • Methods and apparatus are disclosed for operating a cellular communication network. An exemplary method includes the steps of transmitting a message from a base station (30) to a mobile station (10) located within a cell served by the base station, the message including location information for specifying a geographical location of the base station; storing the location information in the mobile station; originating a predetermined call type with the mobile station and appending the stored location information to a call origination message; and routing the call from the network to the call's destination in conjunction with the appended location information. The location information includes at least one of a latitude and a longitude at which the base station is located and an alphanumeric string that is expressive of a geographical location at which the base station is located. The base station location information is useful in determining a location of the mobile station, such as when an emergency call is made. In a further embodiment of this invention an emergency call is originated by a mobile station in response to the deployment of an air bag in a vehicle wherein the mobile station is located.
