    • A light source device for an endoscope is capable of selecting a reading method between a method utilizing a light shading period and a method doing without a light shading period. It is possible to adopt both the new reading method and the conventional reading method. A rotary shutter is composed of, for example, a disk with a light passing portion for securing a light source path and a light shading portion formed on the outer peripheral portion, and a DC motor rotates and stops the rotary shutter. When the electronic endoscope apparatus to which the light source device is applied is of an all-pixels reading type, the rotation mode in which light is output during a predetermined light shading period at intervals of 1/30 sec is set. When the light source device is applied to a conventional electronic endoscope apparatus, for example, of a pixel mixture signal reading type system, the stop mode in which the illuminating light is not shaded is set. The reading system adopted by the electronic endoscope apparatus is judged by an ID discriminator, and the rotary shutter is stopped at a predetermined position by a stop controller in the stop mode.

    • The present invention is a light-source switching and driving unit where an accurate stop operation and a strong holding force are obtained and which is capable of reducing a noise and preventing an impact to light-source lamps. In this unit, a plurality of light-source lamps for being switched and used are disposed. When a burnout sensor detects the burnout of a lamp being currently used, a spare light-source lamp is moved to a predetermined position by a stepping motor. In switching one lamp to another lamp, a pulse generating circuit generates a drive pulse which gradually increases when the stepping motor is started and a drive pulse which gradually decreases when the stepping motor is stopped. The stepping motor is driven by these drive pulses. With this, in switching one lamp to another lamp, a slow operation can be realized when the motor is started and when the motor is stopped.

    • A light source device for an endoscope provided with a noncircular opening which is capable of stabilizing the rate of change of the quantity of illuminating light with the quantity of movement of the stop blade and thereby preventing the hunting phenomenon of the stop blade in close-up or the like. The device comprises: a gate portion with a noncircular opening for linearly changing the quantity of light from the light source formed therein; a stop blade for controlling the quantity of light passing through the noncircular opening of the gate portion; and a motor for driving the stop blade. The noncircular opening has two V-shaped portions having different opening angles. The stop blade is provided with a circular auxiliary opening for passing part of the light therethrough. Owing to the V-shaped portions and the auxiliary opening, a change of the quantity of output light with the amount of movement of the stop blade is made linear and the hunting phenomenon of the stop blade is prevented even in the region where the quantity of light is regulated to a small quantity.
