    • A method and system feeds sheets through a media path in a process direction and moves a laterally movable sheet registration carriage (positioned within the media path) in a lateral direction perpendicular to the process direction. It determines the lateral error of the sheets within the media path before the sheets enter the sheet registration carriage, using first sensors positioned within the media path. This allows the sheet registration carriage to be moved to a variable lateral starting position (as opposed to a consistent reset position or centered reset position) before the sheets enter the sheet registration carriage based on the error of the sheets as determined by the first sensors. The error can be the amount of lateral error, or simply can be a classification of lateral error (right error, left error, etc.).

    • According to aspects illustrated herein, a printmaking device, a method, and a system for reducing process direction errors of a sheet in a registration device is provided herein. The printmaking device includes a feed path, a printing module, and a sheet registration system. The sheet registration system is along the feed path and includes at least one trail edge sensor, a registration controller, and at least one pair of registration nips. The feed path moves a first side of the sheet in a process direction. The registration controller registers the first side of the sheet by: measuring and correcting a first skew error of the sheet; measuring and correcting a first arrival time of the trail edge of the sheet to determine a first process direction position of the sheet; and delivering the first side of the adjusted sheet at a first predefined delivery time.

    • According to aspects illustrated herein, there is provided a method, a system, and a printmaking device for registering a sheet of paper. In the method, the sheet is transported in a process direction along the feed path and past a first and a second optical sensor to determine a first skew of a first edge of the sheet. Next, the first skew of the first edge is calculated using the first time interval, the first distance, and the first velocity. After that, the first skew is used to register a first side of the sheet prior to printing thereon. Then, the sheet is inverted and refed on a second side. Thereafter, the sheet is transported in the process direction along the feed path and past a third and a fourth optical sensor to determine a second skew of the first edge. Finally, the second skew is used to register the second side of the sheet prior to printing thereon.

    • According to aspects illustrated herein, there is provided a method and system for measuring and controlling an angular orientation of a printed sheet along a feed path of a print making device, the printed sheet being a sheet of paper with a paper edge moving along the feed path and an image printed thereon. The method includes the following steps. First, moving the printed sheet past at least one pair of optical sensors to determine a first skew of the paper edge with respect to a first fixed reference and a second skew of the image with respect to a second fixed reference. Then, combining the first skew and the second skew to determine the total skew between the paper edge and the image. Finally, correcting the total skew for subsequent sheets using the first skew and the second skew information. Similar steps can be taken to determine the lateral positioning errors which can then be corrected.

    • A method and system for determining sheet position and orientation of a sheet as the sheet moves along a feed path is provided herein. The method includes moving the sheet along the feed path and past at least one point sensor to measure a first position of the sheet relative to a first reference axis coinciding with the process direction of the feed path. Next, the method provides for moving the sheet along the feed path and past at least one linear array sensor to measure a second position of the sheet relative to a second reference axis disposed perpendicular to the first reference axis and an angular orientation of the sheet in the reference plane relative to a third reference axis perpendicular to the reference plane. After that, a sheet velocity is determined. Then, one or more estimated sheet positions along the feed path are determined.
