    • A system for handing off a mobile node includes a mobile node and a target foreign agent. To effectuate a handoff of the mobile node from an anchor foreign agent to the target foreign agent, a tunnel can be established therebetween such that data packet(s) sent between the mobile node and a correspondent node pass between the target foreign agent and the anchor foreign agent through the tunnel. After the tunnel is established, the mobile node can register with the target foreign agent to thereby bind the mobile node to the target foreign agent such that data packet(s) sent between the mobile node and the correspondent node pass through the target foreign agent to the correspondent node independent of the anchor foreign agent and the tunnel. Thereafter, the target foreign agent can close the tunnel between the target foreign agent and the anchor foreign agent.

    • A method is disclosed to operate a wireless network (20) with a MS (100) and includes, in response to detecting that the MS has changed its location in the wireless network, registering the MS with a BS (45) to indicate the current location of the MS and, in response to the MS registering with the BS, triggering the sending of messages in the wireless network until information that is indicative of the current location of the MS is recorded by an AAA server (80). The AAA server can be subsequently queried to obtain the current location of the MS, such as when a network initiated data session (NIDS) for the MS is initiated. Also disclosed is a method to page a MS by, in response to the initiation of a NIDS for the MS, querying a home AAA server for a current BS/PCF/PDSN affiliation of the MS and sending a page message to the MS in accordance with the current BS/PCF/PDSN affiliation of the MS.

    • Provided are improved systems, methods, devices, and computer program products for optimized access network authentication of an access terminal on an access network supporting negotiation of an application level protocol for the air link or implementing access network authentication functionality with an extended packet-oriented RLP. A packet-oriented air link application layer protocol supporting the functionality of CHAP authentication, such as an application level authentication protocol operating on an HRPD EvDO Rev A access network or an extended packet-oriented RLP operating on an enhanced HRPD EvDO Rev A access network, can be used for authenticating an access terminal on the access network without setting up a PPP session for access network authentication, such as setting up a PPP session with the SC/MM network entity by doing LCP and CHAP just to do terminal authentication using the protocols of the PPP protocol suite. Embodiments of the present invention avoid the need for setting up a PPP session for access network authentication, thus, saving air link resources and time during the authentication process for the access terminal and access network and reducing the complexity of access terminal implementations by avoiding the need for multiple PPP sessions.
