    • A vehicle variable reluctance sensor includes a hollow generally cylindrical sensor housing with an open proximal end. Within the interior of the sensor housing is a coil wound around a “T”-shaped spool. The coil is connected to two electrical terminals by two electrical leads. A channel is formed in the spool between the coil and the electrical leads and the electrical leads are disposed within the channel. The channel is flanked on each side by a lip that extends outwardly from the spool. If the electrical leads become slack under extreme temperatures, the configuration of the channel, in conjunction with the lips, prevents the electrical leads from coming out of the channel and unwinding the coil. As such, it is not necessary to tape the coil or otherwise immerse the coil in varnish to prevent the coil from unwinding.

    • A speed sensor (10) includes a sensor housing (12) mounted to the wall of a transmission, and a pole piece (34) extends out of the sensor housing (12) into the transmission fluid. The pole piece (34) is held by a plastic spool (26) within the sensor housing (12), and an electric coil (28) surrounds the spool (26) and is magnetically coupled to the pole piece (34). The spool (26) is formed with a rib ring (41) that extends away from the pole piece (34) and that terminates in an outer periphery that is closely spaced from the inside wall of the sensor housing (12). To block metal particles in the fluid from entering between the spool (26) and sensor housing (12) that would otherwise damage the coil (28), two ribs (60) are formed on the outer periphery of the spool (26), and an interference fit is established between the ribs (60) and the sensor housing (12) such that the ribs (60) are deformed and the contaminants thereby blocked.

    • A sensor assembly for sensing the angular position of a rotatable body such as a motor vehicle steering column. The sensor assembly includes a ring gear which is zero calibrated upon assembly of the sensor assembly. The sensor assembly further includes a ring member which functions to lock the ring gear to the sensor housing to maintain the zero calibration between the time of calibration and the subsequent mounting of the sensor assembly on the steering column and further functions to release the ring member for free rotation with the steering column in response to mounting of the sensor assembly on the steering column. The locking and releasing functions of the sensor assembly are performed by a finger structure of the ring member which includes a free end which is engaged in a notch in the sensor housing upon calibration of the sensor assembly to maintain the calibration setting and which further includes a release portion which is engaged by the steering column as the sensor assembly is mounted on the steering column to pivot the finger structure in a sense to move the free end of the finger structure out of the housing notch.

The holder assembly and harness head are configured with a means for snap-fit assembly that provides space to mechanically connect corresponding sensor terminals and harness terminals with each other forming a resultant subassembly for insertion into a sensor housing. The housing further includes a heat-staked interface with the harness head that secures the subassembly relative to the sensor housing. A bracket and an elastomeric seal may be disposed in corresponding grooves configured on the sensor housing to complete assembly of the sensor package.

    • In an electronic sensor having a spool assembly and a housing cap, the spool assembly has a pair of grooves formed in the exterior surface and located diametrically opposed from each other.     • A target wheel sensor includes a sensing structure (112) disposed within a hollow sensor housing (102). The sensing structure (112) has a T-shaped spool (114) that includes a pole piece holder (116) that terminates in a magnet holder (118). The target wheel (130) is placed in proximity to the sensor (100) and as the target wheel (130) rotates and a tooth (132) passes by the sensor (100) the force of magnetic attraction between the pole piece (120) and the tooth (132) will draw the pole piece (120) toward the target wheel (130) and into the extended position. As the target wheel (130) continues to rotate, the tooth (132) will move away from the pole piece (120) causing the magnetic force to lessen and allowing the pole piece (120) to return to the retracted position under the influence of a spring (128).
