    • A hand-held and operated pneumatically powered device for injecting fluids, such as in medical applications, consisting of a housing that is sized and shaped to be hand held, and connected power and infusion assemblies contained within the housing. The power assembly includes a sealed vessel containing pressurized gas, a lever-needle vessel-puncturing mechanism, a gas flow path leading from the needle to the infusion assembly, and pressure regulator and pressure relief mechanism (which may include a pneumatic flow control orifice) interposed in the flow path. The infusion assembly includes a two-way valve for exhausting the gas or directing it into a power chamber for receiving the gas connected in tandem with an infusion chamber that holds the infusate, a two-headed piston contained within and spanning the two chambers with one of its heads in contact with the pressurized gas and the other in contact with the infusate, and a throttle mechanism at the outlet of the infusion chamber for regulating the pressurized flow of infusate into and out of the infusion chamber by means of a two-way valve. A pressure gauge may be provided for measuring the pressure of the infusate.In one embodiment, two power infusion devices are coupled together with a common pressurized gas source and are also coupled together at their outlets for providing two different infusates to the proximal and distal ends of a catheter. A ball valve is utilized to purge the infusates of entrapped gas.

    • An apparatus for measuring fluid pressure in a passage or tube for use with medical apparatus such as balloon catheters. A diaphragm gauge is provided and includes a case which houses a first diaphragm, a translation mechanism connected to the first diaphragm and a pointer attached to the translation mechanism for providing readouts of fluid pressure. The diaphragm is coupled to a fluid passage, such that changes in fluid pressure cause the diaphragm to activate the translation mechanism, thus providing readouts by means of the pointer. A second diaphragm is provided for sealing the fluid passage from the first diaphragm, for preventing transfer of materials between the first diaphragm and the passage. The second diaphragm is of a biocompatible, nonpyrogenic, sterlizable material, such a polyurethane, polyvinylchloride, or polyethylene. Alternatively, a biocompatible, nonpyrogenic coating may be provided on the first diaphragm for sealing it from the fluid passage. In an alternative embodiment, the fluid passage is configured for tightly receiving a catheter, the wall of which contacts the first diaphragm for transmitting pressure due to fluid within the catheter to the first diaphragm. The translation mechanism may be a mechanical lever for converting diaphragm movements to rotational movement of the pointer, or it may be an electronic transducer, in which case the pointer and dial are replaced by an electronically actuable display.

An O-ring, which forms a seal between the cap and housing, is disposed relative to a circumferential shoulder which cooperates with a camming surface to cause the cap to pop from the housing when rotated. An associated method includes the steps of rotating the cap a first angular distance to engage the camming surface and a second angular distance to cause the O-ring to traverse the shoulder.

    • A needle biopsy device has a suction source, an inner cannula, and an outer cannula. The inner cannula has a biopsy reservoir formed proximate the distal end thereof and also has a lumen formed therein. The lumen provides fluid communication from the suction source to the biopsy reservoir. The outer cannula is slidably disposed about the inner cannula and has a cutter formed at the distal end thereof. The outer cannula has a distal position wherein it substantially covers the biopsy reservoir and has a proximate position wherein the biopsy reservoir is substantially exposed. An actuating mechanism moves the outer cannula from the distal position to the proximate position thereof, facilitates the application of suction from the suction source to the biopsy reservoir and moves the outer cannula from the proximate position to the distal position thereof. Moving the outer cannula from the distal position to the proximate position thereof and creating suction that the biopsy reservoir causes a tissue sample to be pulled into the biopsy reservoir. Moving the outer cannula from the proximal position to the distal position thereof causes the cutter to cut the tissue sample from surrounding tissue and also captures the tissue sample within the biopsy reservoir.

    • A method and device for the placement of sutures and for the purpose of approximating tissue. A particular utility is effected in the approximation of the tissue separated by means of an endosurgical trocar being inserted into a body cavity. The invention provides for the loading of suture material including needles into the device, introduction and placement of the device into the body cavity, with the distal end having deployable needle guides, extending the needle guides either simultaneously or individually to the periphery of the wound, engaging the wound with the needle guides, driving the needles and suture material through the tissue to be approximated into a catch mechanism, retracting the needle guides and withdrawing the device, leaving a loop of suture material in the margin of tissue. The suture may then be tied to approximate the wound and excess suture material cut off. The invention also provides for the placement of sutures for the endoscopic approximation, fixation, and ligation of tissues within a body cavity including the driving and retrieval of needle and suture combinations, and facilitating the tying of knots.
