A method for entering a power saving mode of a terminal includes a first operation for starting a first timer after transmitting an idle mode request message; a second operation for, when an idle mode approval message is not received until the first timer expires, checking whether a number of retransmissions of the idle mode request message exceeds a number of allowed retransmissions of the idle mode request message; a third operation for, when the number of the retransmissions of the idle mode request message exceeds the number of the allowed retransmissions of the idle mode request message, increasing a number of idle mode entry failures; and a fourth operation for, when the increased number of the idle mode entry failures is greater than N times, entering a power saving mode which powers off a modem.

摘要： A method is provided for reducing power consumption of a mobile station (MS) in a wireless communication system. If a period of time for state transition from a normal mode to a sleep mode or an idle mode expires, the MS transmits a request message for state transition to a corresponding operation mode to a base station (BS) with which the MS is currently communicating. Upon receiving a response message to the request message, the MS performs a state transition to the sleep mode or the idle mode. Upon detecting a change in service area in the sleep mode, the MS performs a state transition to the normal mode. Upon receiving a paging advertisement message from a corresponding BS in the idle mode, the MS performs a state transition to the normal mode.

摘要： An apparatus and method for updating the location of an idle-mode MS in a communication system are provided, in which the MS transmits a ranging request message requesting location update to a BS, receives a ranging response message from the BS, determines from the ranging response message whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS, and performs network reentry if downlink traffic has been generated for the MS, and upon receipt of the ranging request message from the MS, the BS performs a location update procedure, determines whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS, generates the ranging response message including information indicating whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS, and transmits the ranging response message to the MS.
