    • In a radio communication system operating in at least two spaced-apart frequency bands above 200 MHz, a quadrifilar helical antenna (1) having an elongate dielectric core with a relative dielectric constant greater than 5 has a conductive sleeve surrounding a proximal part of the core and a longitudinal feeder structure (1A) extending through the core to a connection with the helical antenna elements at a distal end of the core. The antenna (1) is operated in a first frequency band in which it exhibits a first, balanced mode of resonance characterised by current maxima and voltage minima at the connections of the helical elements to the feeder structure and at their junctions with the rim of the sleeve, and in a lower or higher second frequency band in which the antenna (1) exhibits a second, single-ended mode of resonance characterised by current maxima and voltage minima generally at the ends of the core and current minima and voltage maxima at one or more intermediate locations. To permit dual mode operation, the system includes an impedance-matching coupling stage (2) which may be a diplexer having filters coupled between a common port for the antenna (1) and further ports for connection to radio signal processing equipment such as a GPS receiver (4) and a mobile telephone (5) operating in the two frequency bands. The filters and impedance matching elements may be formed as microstrip elements on a single substrate.

    • A dielectric-loaded loop antenna for operation at frequencies above 200 MHz has an elongate cylindrical core with a relative dielectric constant greater than 5, a pair of co-extensive helical antenna elements, a coaxial feeder structure extending through the core from a proximal end to a distal end where it is coupled to the antenna elements, and a balum formed on the core cylindrical surface and connected to the feeder structure at the proximal end of the core. Each helical antenna element is bifurcated at an intermediate position so that proximally, it is formed of two generally parallel branches each of which is coupled to a respective linking path around the core to meet a corresponding branch of the other elongate element therefore forming a conductive loop between the two conductors of the feeder structure. The two conductive loops have different electrical lengths as a result of, for example, the branches being of differents lengths. In a preferred embodiment, the linking paths around the core are formed by the rim of a split conductive sleeve constituting the balum. The sleeve is formed in two parts separated by a pair of longitudinally extending diametrically opposed quarter wave slits each of which extends from the space between the branches of a respective helical antenna element to a short circuited end adjacent the proximal end of the core.

    • Apparatus and methods for distributing synchronization throughout a network is disclosed. The distribution of the synchronization is through the use of generating a reference timing signal, and by counting the line clock pulses between the start of a frame and the timing reference signal pulse at a first office and that count is then encoded and transmitted to the next office. At the next office, the transmitted count is decoded and used for regenerating synchronization by counting a number of received line clock pulses from the start of the frame to regenerate the reference timing signal. Particular criteria for selecting the frequencies for the timing reference signal are disclosed.

    • A dielectric-loaded antenna for operation at frequencies over 200 MHz has a cylindrical ceramic core (12) with a relative dielectric constant greater than 5. The core is formed with recesses (34A, 34B, 34C, 34D) in its cylindrical outer surface and the recesses are filled with conductive material thereby forming a three-dimensional antenna element structure having antenna elements (10A, 10B, 10C, 10D) inlaid in the ceramic material and with their outer surfaces flush with the outer surface of the core. The antenna is manufactured by forming the core from the ceramic material when in a green state, firing the core, metallising the core outer surface whereby conductive material enters the recesses as well as covering other parts of the core outer surface, and then machining the metallised core to an extent such that conductive material is left in the recesses but portions of the core between the recesses are exposed. The recesses are generally rectangular in cross section such that the conductive antenna elements have well-defined edges of a predetermined thickness to provide low electrical resistance along the element sides where radio frequency currents are concentrated.

At the operating frequency, the antenna behaves as a loop, the radiation response having nulls directed generally perpendicularly on each side of a plane containing the central axis of the core and the connections of the helical elements with the feeder structure and with the conductive sleeve.
