摘要： PURPOSE: To highly reliably detect discontinuity of the conductor of an electric wire covered with an insulating coating by exposing the conductor at both ends of the wire and fitting an accelerometer (vibrometer) to one end of the conductor and adapter to the other end of the conductor, and then, applying reproducible impacts to the conductor through the adapter and detecting discontinuity in the conductor from the waveform detected by the accelerometer. CONSTITUTION: An adapter 2 having a half-ring-like shape provided with an AE sensor 3 is attached to one exposed end of the conductor 12 of an electric wire 1 covered with an insulating coating 11 and another adapter 2 having the same shape is attached to the other exposed end of the conductor 13. Then the conductor 12 is vibrated by applying reproducible impulse waves to the adapter 2 on the right side in the Figure and the vibration of the conductor 12 is detected by means of the AE sensor 3. When the conductor is discontinued, the waveform of the vibration is distorted as indicated by A in the Figure. Therefore, the disconnection of the conductor 12 can be easily detected easily with high reliable accuracy over the full length of the wire 1.

In this state, the excessive-length storage tray 8 is drawn out of the upper case 1 to form a proper open space between the cases 1 and 2. The connecting operation for an optical fiber is carried on by using the open space. After the excessive-length part is put in the tray 8 after the connection of the coated optical fiber, the lower case 2 is lifted along the slide rail 4, the tray 8 is put in the upper case 1, and the lower case 2 is fixed to the upper case 1 by the metallic anchor 6.

SOLUTION: In an optical fiber compound submarine power cable, on the periphery of a plastic pipe formed with a power cable main unit 1 in the inside, a steel wire armoring 3 is applied, and an optical fiber unit 4 is arranged between steel wires 31 of the steel wire armoring 3. This fiber unit 4 is constituted by storing an optical fiber 44 in a metal pipe 41 provided with plastic coating layers 42, 43 of two-layer structure on the periphery. In this plastic coating layer 42, polyethylene or the like is used, and in the plastic coating layer 43, high density polyethylene or the like harder than the layer 42 is used, and both the layers are formed by extrusion. Thus by arranging the fiber unit 4 between the steel wires 31 of the steel wire armoring 3, increasing of an external diameter and heat resistance by optical fiber compounding is eliminated, with no increasing required of a cage of a armoring machine.

CONSTITUTION:Optical transmission lines 30 and 50 are halfway branched by tree type optical couplers C1 to C4 and are formed like a tree. Tree type optical couplers C1 to C4 have two ports P11 and P12, two ports P21 and P22, two ports P31 and P32, and P41 and P42 for input or output of optical signals respectively on the start point side of the tree. Normally, only one ports P11, P21, P31, and P41 are used and the other ports are spare. If a fault occurs in any place, a cable for emergency is connected to spare ports P12, P22, P32, and P42 to form a transmission line bypassing this place where the fault occurs.
