    • A relatively small amount of styrene can be smoothly graftpolymerized on a polyphenylene oxide with a high graft efficiency and in a high polymerization yield by polymerizing 0.4 to 2 parts by weight of a styrene compound in the presence of 1 part by weight of a polyphenylene oxide, or 15 to 60 parts by weight of a styrene compound in the presence of 40 to 85 parts by weight of a mixture comprising 74 to 96% by weight of a polyphenylene oxide and 26 to 4% by weight of a rubbery polymer, in an aqueous dispersion containing a dispersion stabilizer and a radical initiator. In order to carry out the polymerization reaction more efficiently and more smoothly, it is preferable that the styrene compound in excess of the amount to be contained in the final graft polymer is initially made present in the polymerization system, unreacted styrene compound is removed in the form of an azeotropic mixture with water by distillation in the course of polymerization, thereby leaving the desired amount of styrene in the system, and the reaction is further continued to complete the polymerization. In this manner, a bead-like graft polymer excellent in surface state and having a smaller diameter can be obtained.

    • 1,254,337. Grafted polyphenylene oxides. SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 6 Aug., 1969 [8 Aug., 1968], No. 39411/69. Heading C3G. A grafted polyphenylene oxide is prepared by contacting 0-1 to 10 parts by weight of one or more styrene monomers represented by the Formula Ia: wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 are individually a hydrogen or halogen atom, or a cyano, nitro, amino, mono- or dialkylamino, -50 3 H, a hydroxy group, unsubstituted or halogen- or cyano-substituted hydrocarbon or unsubstituted or halogen-substituted hydrocarbonoxy group, or 0-1 to 10 parts by weight of a mixture of the styrene monomer or monomers of the Formula Ia and one or more alpha-alkyl substituted styrene monomers represented by the Formula Ib: wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 are as defined above, and R 6 is an alkyl group with a radical initiator in the presence of 1 part by weight polyphenylene oxide having recurring structural units of the formula wherein R 1 1 , R1 2 , R 1 3 and R1 4 are individually a hydrogen or halogen atom or an unsubstituted or halogen- or cyano-substituted hydrocarbon, an unsubstituted or halogen-substituted hydrocarbonoxy, cyano, mono- or dialkylamino or nitro group, in an aqueous medium comprising an anionic or nonionic surfactant, a solvent for said polyphenylene oxide and at least 0-5 times the total weight of the solvent and compounds Ia, or Ia and Ib, and II of water. Specified solvents are benzene, toluene, xylene, chloro- or nitro-benzene, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride In the examples (a) styrene or a mixture thereof with p-methoxystyrene, alpha-methylstyrene or alpha-methyl-p-methyl styrene is grafted on to poly (2,6-dimethyl- 1,4-phenylene oxide) or (b) styrene is grafted on to poly (2,6-diethyl. 1 ,4-phenylene oxide), the grafting being carried out in an aqueous medium containing xylene, a surfactant selected from sodium stearate, sodium myristate, sodium laurate, sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate, polyoxyethylene-9-octadecene ether, sorbitan monolaurate, lauryl trimethylammonium chloride, polyoxyethylene alkylamine or polyoxyethylene monooleate, a peroxy catalyst or a mixture thereof with a reducing agent and, as dispersion stabilizer, sodium pyrophosphate or sodium carboxymethyl cellulose.
