    • A battery and control module (14, 128, 1200) for use with a surgical tool unit (12, 124) that includes a brushless DC motor (18, 950) having a rotor (966) and an energy applicator (17) that is actuated by the brushless DC motor (18, 950) that is adapted for use to perform a medical/surgical procedure is described. The surgical tool unit (10, 124) is adapted to be releasably held to the battery and control module (14, 128, 1200). The battery and control module (14, 128, 1200) comprises a housing having a void space, the housing constructed so as to seal the void space from the ambient environment, at least one rechargeable cell (38) disposed in the void space, and at least two contacts (76, 77, 350) mounted to the housing, the at least two contacts (76, 77, 350) positioned to connect to contacts (74, 75, 894, 902) integral with the brushless DC motor (18, 950) so that current from the at least one rechargeable cell (38) can be selectively sourced to the brushless DC motor (18, 950). The battery and control module (14, 128, 1200) further comprises a driver (620) disposed in the void space, the driver (620) being adapted to selectively tie the at least one rechargeable cell (38) to the at least two contacts (76, 77, 350) so that current can be selectively sourced from or sunk to any one of the at least two contacts (76, 77, 350). The driver (620) is further configured to allow current flow through at least one of the contacts (76, 77, 350) to the at least one rechargeable cell (38) so that the at least one rechargeable cell (38) can be charged by applying current to the contact (76, 77, 350) through which the at least one rechargeable cell (38) sources current to the brushless DC motor (18, 950).
