Vehicles for elevated railways.-A cigar-shaped mail-carrier 15 contains a telescoping- part 26 which is raised and lowered by means of a block-andtackle connexion between the roof of the carrier and the floor of the part 26. Windows at the forward end of the part 26 are in line with windows in the part 15. The wheels 14 of the carrier travel on the cable 13. The shafts 16 of the wheels are journaled in the upper ends of uprights 17 mounted on the roof of the carrier and retained in position by brace rods. A motor 19 is mounted on a frame 18 carried by these shafts and uprights. The shaft 21 of the motor is connected by sprocket gearing with the shaft of the forward wheel 14. Posts 7, disposed in pairs on opposite sides of the road, are connected at their upper ends by brace rods, and carry brackets 8 with hangers 9 for the trolley wire 10, and parallel brackets 11 with arms 12 supporting the track 13. The electric motor is controlled from within the part 26. The car is stopped on reaching a mail box, the part 26 is lowered, and mail is collected or delivered through a door in the lowered part To prevent the wheels from slipping from the track, they are grooved or flanged, and a continuous tread of rubber or similar material is fitted in the groove.
