After the valve is out of the packaging solution, the pouch can be broken to render the hydrogel (and any coagulant) effective following implantation of the valve in a patient.

The outer perimeter portion has a different shape than a perimeter of the valve core when both perimeters are viewed along an axis that will be the axis of blood flow through the valve core when the prosthetic heart valve is in use in a patient. The outer perimeter portion is used to mount the valve to another structure such as a native valve annulus in a valve replacement procedure. The mounting retainer bridges the gap(s) between the valve core and the outer perimeter portion, and may also provide attachment sites for other native tissue structures (like chordae tendonae), which attachment sites can be at or at least closer to original (native) attachment sites for those tissue structures.

The mandrel (300) has a top surface and an outer surface comprising a plurality of ridges (306) and contoured surfaces (310) extending to the ridges (306). An edge (312) on the mandrel (300) separates the top surface (314) and the contoured surfaces (310), with the mandrel edge (312) corresponding to the free edge of the leaflet. In preferred embodiments, the edge (312) separating the top surface (314) from the contoured surfaces (310) is sharp. The polymer formed on the top surface (314) can be efficiently separated from the remaining portions of the polymer structure to form the free edges of the leaflets.
