摘要： The reflectivity of the reflective layer (300) in a transflective liquid crystal display (100) is adjustable. This arrangement allows for an optimisation of the display brightness by adjusting the layer's reflectivity and the intensity of the backlight (200) as a function of the ambient light conditions. Power consumption in the backlight may thus be minimised. The reflective layer comprises microelectromechanical (MEMS) mirrors (305) which are either extendable or foldable in the plane of reflector in response to a control signal determined by the detected ambient light level, so that the amount of reflectivity (and transmissivity) of the display may be controlled. In one embodiment there is one MEMS mirror associated with each LCD subpixel. The mirrors may be controlled individually, as groups, or as an entirety.
