    • The present invention relates to a method for encoding/decoding a motion vector and an apparatus thereof, and comprises the steps of: selecting a candidate motion vector set for a current motion vector, selecting a prediction motion vector from the candidate motion vector set, and judging whether or not the prediction motion vector is predictable in a decoding apparatus. If the prediction motion vector is predictable, the current motion vector is encoded using a motion vector prediction mode that indicates a prediction motion vector and a prediction possibility. If the prediction motion vector is not predictable, the current vector is encoded using a motion vector prediction mode that indicates a default prediction motion vector and a prediction impossibility. According to the invention, the method and the apparatus can provide information for searching for the prediction motion vector and share a certain function for the search without directly notifying the prediction motion vector for the current motion vector to the decoding apparatus so that the current motion vector may be encoded and/or decoded by selecting the prediction motion vector according to the motion vector prediction mode, and the motion vector prediction mode may be transmitted to the decoding apparatus. Therefore, the amount of encoded bits can be reduced and the performances of the motion vector prediction and compensation can be improved.

The present invention provides a motion vector encoding apparatus comprising: an optimum motion vector determination unit which determines an optimum motion vector for a plurality of reference pictures for the present motion vector of the present block; a motion vector encoding mode determination unit which determines a motion vector encoding mode in accordance with whether the motion vector encoding apparatus may or may not predict the optimum motion vector for the plurality of reference pictures; and a motion vector encoding unit which generates motion information for the plurality of reference pictures by using the optimum motion vector for the plurality of reference pictures or a default motion vector for a plurality of preset reference pictures in accordance with the motion vector encoding mode, encodes the motion information, and encodes the motion vector encoding mode to generate motion vector encoding data. The present invention improves the accuracy of the predicted motion vector of the present motion vector for the plurality of reference vectors, and reduces the bit rate required for motion vector encoding, thus achieving improved compression efficiency.

    • The present invention relates to an apparatus and to a method for motion vector encoding/decoding, and to an apparatus and to a method for image encoding/decoding using same. The motion vector encoding apparatus of the present invention comprises: a predicted motion vector selector for selecting an optimum predicted motion vector from among the candidate motion vector group of the current block; a prediction mode determiner for selecting one motion vector prediction mode from among a plurality of motion vector prediction modes on the basis of the determination criteria previously agreed upon by a motion vector decoding apparatus, and determining the selected motion vector prediction mode as a motion vector prediction mode of the current block; and an encoder for determining the optimum predicted motion vector or a default predicted motion vector as a predicted motion vector for the current motion vector in accordance with the determined motion vector prediction mode, encoding a differential vector between the current block and the determined predicted motion vector, and selectively encoding the determined motion vector prediction mode in accordance with the determined motion vector prediction mode and outputting the encoded motion vector prediction mode in accordance with the determined motion vector prediction mode. The present invention reduces bit rates required for encoding a motion vector to thereby improve encoding efficiency, and prevents failures in the encoder even when an error occurs during encoding thereby improving the performance of the encoder.
