    • The improved locking pawl of this invention is adapted for use with a ratchet wheel having ratchet teeth. The locking pawl has a locking surface, a sensing tip and a pivoting point. In the preferred embodiment, the locking pawl has a substantially arcuate shape, pivots in the same direction in which the ratchet wheel turns and the sensing tip is disposed on the periphery of the locking surface. In an alternate embodiment, the locking pawl has a sensing surface, pivots for engagement in a direction opposite to the direction in which the ratchet wheel turns and the sensing tip and the sensing surface are spaced apart from the locking surface. Both embodiments of the locking pawl, as well as the ratchet wheel associated therewith, are provided with case hardened zones and non-case hardened zones.

    • The locking mechanism is operated by inertia and prevents withdrawal of a vehicle safety belt from its retractor when the locking mechanism is subjected to a predetermined acceleration or deceleration or a sudden change in orientation or direction of movement. The locking mechanism is vehicle sensitive and uses a substantially conical inertia member, mounted on a plurality of balls which are disposed on a retaining platform. A substantially conical actuating member having an open bottom is disposed over the inertia member. A locking dog is affixed to the substantially conical member. The inertia member is adapted to be disposed in a rest position in the approximate center of the retaining platform and is adapted to be displaced from the rest position by inertia to an engaged position at or near the periphery of the retaining platform, causing the locking dog to engage a ratchet wheel connected to the safety belt reel to restrain the safety belt against withdrawal.

[Also in Division F2] A buckle for connecting safety belts and the like to brackets comprises a buckle plate 4 having a hook shaped recess 13 at one end to receive a bracket 14 and a belt attaching means at the opposite end, a fastening hook 16, 17 pivotally mounted on the same pivot one on each side of the plate 4 to fasten the bracket in the recess, a housing 1 slidable over the plate and having a rim 21 in contact with the free ends of the hooks and a spring 23 to hold the free ends continually in contact with the rim. The bracket is engaged by the buckle by pressing the bracket into the recess. The bracket is released by raising the housing 1 thereby pivoting the hooks to releasing position. A stop 26 on the housing and stop edges 9, 10 on the buckle plate limit the movement of the plate relatively to the housing.
