    • The invention features a method according to which a) for each combustion phase of the air-fuel mixture an observation window defined by predetermined angular positions on the crankshaft is set; b) in each window a series of time deviations ( DELTA Ti) separating the passages of the crankshaft in predetermined angular positions is measured; c) two linear combinations ( SIGMA ai DELTA T1) and ( SIGMA bi DELTA Ti) of the time deviations are calculated, each of the coefficients (ai) and (bi) of the combinations being chosen to amplify the variations in the said window, of the alternating component of the angular speed ( OMEGA 1, OMEGA 2) of the crankshaft when the corresponding time deviation ( DELTA Ti) is measured in the first and second operating modes of the engine respectively, for which the alternating components ( OMEGA 0, OMEGA 90) are out of phase with respect to each other by a predetermined angle ( PHI 0), and d) an estimate of the torque is deduced from the value of a norm applied to the two linear combinations.
