      SOLUTION: The process for producing the fine metal oxide particles comprises subjecting a gaseous organometallic compound to combustion in a gas phase in the presence of an oxidizing substance; or mixing a gaseous organometallic compound with an oxidizing substance to prepare a mixture and subjecting the mixture to combustion; or mixing an organometallic compound solution with an oxidizing substance to prepare a mixture, then making the mixture into a gaseous state, and then subjecting the gaseous mixture to combustion; or mixing an oxidizing substance with a gaseous organometallic compound prepared by vaporizing an organometallic compound solution to prepare a mixture and subjecting the mixture to combustion.

In the formulae, R 1 -R 6 are each independently a hydrogen atom or a 1-3C alkyl group; R 7 is a hydrogen atom or a 1-4C alkyl group; and at least one of R 1 -R 6 is a hydrogen atom.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing a mercaptocarboxylate of a polyhydric alcohol improved in odor by causing mercaptocarboxylic acid or a mercaptocarboxylate to react with a polyhydric alcohol, instead of a prior art method only capable of producing (highly) odorous mercaptocarboxylate of a polyhydric alcohol.
      SOLUTION: The method of producing a mercaptocarboxylate (a') of a polyhydric alcohol of low odor includes subjecting mercaptocarboxylic acid or a mercaptocarboxylate, and a polyhydric alcohol comprising 2 to 6 hydroxy groups in its molecule to an esterification reaction under a pressure condition of 0.05 to 20 kPa, and further heat-treating the resulting mercaptocarboxylate (a) of the polyhydric alcohol under vacuum.
