Miners' dress and personal equipments.-Apparatus far enabling miners &c. to breathe in smoke or foul air consists of a helmet or hood, supplied with air or oxygen from cylinders carried on the back. The airtight fireproof hood C, Fig. 1, is gathered round the neck of the wearer by the band S, and is provided with glazed openings G and a valve E. The valve permits of the discharge of exhaled air, but not of the entrance of air from outside unless it is held open. The reservoirs R contain compressed air or oxygen, and are carried on the back by shoulder hooks F and breast straps F'. They communicate by means of valves with a pipe T, to which the flexible pipe T communicating with the hood is connected. Thus, the supply of air from each may be regulated or stopped. A reservoir R at the back of the cylinder R communicates with the pipe T by means of a valve V , and is used solely for an emergency supply. An auxiliary mask M, having a valve E , is provided for wear by a rescued person. The mask is fed from the reservoirs by a tube T', which screws on to a nipple on the pipe T. The nipple, which also serves for re-charging the reservoirs, is provided with a valve which prevents the egress of the air, but is held open by the pipe T when in place.
