    • 25,341. Shaw, A., and Bland, A. Dec. 1. Stuffing - boxes.- Relates to metallic packing for pistonrods, valve rods, and the like ; two kinds of such packing are described. (1) In one kind of packing, of which Fig. 3 shows one form, a series of split rings 2, 3, 4 are contained in a conical cup 1, which has a flat bearing-face at the bottom at right-angles to the rod. The adjacent faces of the rings 2 and 3 are coned so that they are approximately at rightangles to the conical face of the cup. The inner end of the cup has a flat bearing against a spherically-seated ring 9, and the rings and cup are pressed home by a spring acting against a follower 7. In one form, two sets of rings and cups pressed in opposite directions are employed ; and, in another form, additional rings are used in the one cup and the endwise pressure is exerted by a number of small springs lodged in recesses in a spring block-ring. (2) The second kind of packing improved is like that described in Specification No. 15,922, A.D. 1898. In this, shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the packing blocks 17 are contained in L-rings 16 made with pockets 16 for the reception of springs 19 for pressing the blocks 17 against the rod.

Transmitting-mechanism; safety gear.-In steamengine or like governor transmitting-mechanism of the type described in Specification No. 23,609, A.D. 1895, wherein the governor rocks a pivoted T-shaped lever b carrying at its end a rack b tn engage and turn a pallet-plate d which when moved allows one of two reciprocating pawls g to engage with a face-wheel f, a safety device is provided and the spur-wheel i, which transmits the movement of the face-wheel through a pinion k to a sleevenut l, is made separate from the face-wheel so that interchangeable gear-wheels may be employed. Rotation of the sleeve-nut varies the length of the valve rod. The pawls mounted on a carrier h and the pallet plate move about a regulator spindle e to which the face-wheel is keyed. To prevent the regulating action from continuing after the valve has been fully opened, the pawls are lifted from the face-plate by action on the T-shaped lever of a finger u carried by a wormwheel t, this wheel being rotated by a worm on the regulator spindle. A similar device may be used to act when steam is being cut off. The spur-wheel is connected to the face-wheel by keys or screws, and in the former case is interchangeable with the pinion k. The sleeve-nut rotates with, and slides relatively to a bush o on which the pinion is mounted ; or the pinion may be directly mounted on the sleeve-nut.
