摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal element formed with domains in a liquid crystal material by a simple method by changing the conditions to be imparted to the liquid crystal material so as to separate dopants from the liquid crystal material in order to impart plural nucleation points. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal compn, and a monomer having one photopolymerizable functional group are mixed and this mixture is injected to electrode substrates 13, 14. In this stage, an empty cell is arranged in a vacuum chamber and the mixture is injected into the cell from an injection port while the mixture is kept heated. This cell is cooled down to room temp. at a prescribed rate after the injection. The monomer is polymerized by irradiating the monomer with light, such as UV rays, at the temp. at which the liquid crystal compsn. exhibits a smectic phase in this stage. The mixture in the cell is heated again up to the temp. at which the liquid crystal compsn. exhibits a phase on the higher temp. side than the smectic phase after the formation of the monomer. The cell is thereafter cooled down to room temp. at the prescribed rate. The restrainings of the polymer by the interaction between the polymer and oriented films 7, 8 and between the polymer and the liquid crystal molecules, respectively, are released by executing such stages.

SOLUTION: This element is equipped with a couple of substrates 10, at least one of which is transparent, and a porous structure which is sandwiched between both the substrates and changes the shape of pores 12 in the porous structure with an external stimulation input to modulate incident light 15. For example, when a piezoelectric element as a stimulation responsive element to the optical modulator, pores 12 can be put in an intense light scattering state by adjusting the size of the pores almost to the wavelength of light, when no voltage is applied and in a light-transmitting state, by decreasing or eliminating the size of the pores when a voltage is applied.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a liquid crystal element from being defectively filled with a liquid crystal, to prevent a liquid crystal element substrate from being damaged and also to shorten a filling time. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a jig 12a for sealing for sides of a liquid crystal element 11 by holding substrates from vertical directions, and a jig 12b for sealing only the side including an exhaust port 35. Liquid crystal is applied to the filling port 34 before filling, and the insides of the jigs 12a, 12b are vacuumed to exhaust air respectively and decrease an inner pressure in the liquid crystal element 11 by using a vacuum pump, and then, the liquid crystal is supplied to the filling port 34a through liquid crystal supply tube 29a to start filling. When filling, such a temperature is set that the liquid crystal for filling takes either cholesteric phase or isotropic phase, and exhausting is continued. After filling, the liquid crystal is cooled down to the room temperature, and further, the liquid crystal is applied to the filling port 34 and the exhaust port 35, and also re-injected at the room temperature or higher and under the atmospheric pressure or higher.
