CONSTITUTION:A video display control mechanism 21 writes display contents in a display buffer 22 and a video controller 23 makes a display on a display 24. On the display buffer, a cell 331 of one byte 31 of a character code and one byte 32 of a character attribute corresponds to one half-size character. A full-size character uses two adjacent cells; and the high-order bytes are put in one cell and the lower-order bytes are put in the other cell. Then the video display control mechanism when writing the two-byte half-size character in the display buffer decides whether or not a character is a two-byte character (full-size character plus two-byte half-size character) and then decides whether the character is a two-byte half-size character or not, and converts this character into a half-size character when the character is the two-byte half-size character and then writes it in the display buffer.

    • PURPOSE:To evade a device from going into a stop condition, and simultaneously, to decrease the load of a user by providing a means to read in a program to be set beforehand when a designation from an operator is not executed for a definite time related to the read-in of a computer control program from an external storage device. CONSTITUTION:A read-in mechanism 13 transfers the computer control program from an external storage device 12 to an internal storage device 11 and reads the computer control program in the internal storage device 11. A timer 14 is used by the read-in mechanism 13 and measures a passing time between two time points indicated by the read-in mechanism 13. When the designation by the operator is actually executed at a time to designate the computer control program to be read in by the operator, it is made effective, but when no designation is executed and a definite time to be set beforehand passes, the fact that the computer control program to be set beforehand is designated is considered. Thus, the device can be evaded from going into the stop condition, and simultaneously, the load of the user can be decreased.

    • PURPOSE:To freely change a management code of an external storage device on the outside without changing the internal processing of an OS by providing a means which changes the management code of the external storage device in a computer control program. CONSTITUTION:A computer control program OS 13 manages an internal storage device 11 and an external storage device 12, and a control program 14 of the external storage device 12 receives the indication of the OS 13 to control the external storage device 12. The management code of the external storage device 12 is given in order from 0. When a user gives the indication to give the code to the external storage device 12 by a method other than the method used in he OS 13, the OS 13 substitutes the management code used for input/output to the external storage device 12 and changes the management code viewed from the external without changing the internal processing. Thus, the code is freely given to the external storage device 12 independently of the processing method in the OS 13.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate retrieval of an image by recording number data denoting number of people included in an image on the basis of picture data and the picture data corresponding to each other. SOLUTION: A CCD 13 converts a light converged by a condenser lens 12 into charges in response to a luminous quantity and transfers the charges to a RAM 15. Since the data transferred from the CCD 13 have only information equivalent to one color as to pixels, a controller 11 applies color interpolation to data stored in the RAM 15 based on color information of surrounding pixels to generate image data having information of 256 gradations for each of R, G, B colors. Number of people photographed in the image is calculated from the generated image data. Then the image data is compressed by an irreversible compression system in compliance with the JPEG standards to generate compressed data with a small capacity, and a flash memory 16 stores the compressed data in compliance with the JPEG. In this case, the number of people to be calculated is written as the number of man data to a header or footer part of the compressed data.
