    • PURPOSE:To obtain a display device excellent in color reproducibility and gray scale display by changing the transmissibity of polarizing plates mounted on liquid crystal light valves for forming an image by using respective color beams correspondingly to the optical intensity of respective color beams in accordance with incident color beams. CONSTITUTION:The display device is constituted of an illuminating system, optical systems 102, 103 to be used for color separation, plural liquid crystal light valves 104-106 for forming an image by using plural color beams, an optical system for synthesizing the color beams, and a projecting optical system. Each of the liquid crystal light valves 104-106 has at least one polarizing plate and the transmissibity of the polarizing plates mounted on respective light valves for incident color beams is changed in accordance with the light intensity of respective color beams. The color separated beams are red, green and blue beams and the polarizing plates are color polarizing plates having color spectral characteristics. Consequently, a projected image free from color shear and excellent in color reproducibility can be obtained.

    • PURPOSE:To remove coloring of half tone display by optimizing the arrangement of TN liquid crystal light bulb polarizing plates to red, green and blue light beams. CONSTITUTION:A polarizing plate on the projection side is arranged in common with red, green and blue beams so that the absorbing axis 6 of the polarizing plate is almost parallel with the orientation axis 5 of liquid crystal molecules on a projection substrate. On the other hand, an incident polarizing plate is arranged so that the transmission axes for red, green and blue beams are set up like 1-3 and angular differences obtained by subtracting the twisted angles of the TN liquid crystal in respective TN liquid crystal light bulbs from angles formed by the transmission axes 1-3 and the absorbing axis 6 of the projecting polarizing plate in the twisted direction of the liquid crystal molecules are reduced in the order of red, green and blue. Consequently, the voltage/ transmissivity curves of red, green and blue components are made almost coincide with each other, so that colorless excellent half tone display can be obtained.

    • PURPOSE:To eliminate influences upon display pictures of light scattering, light transmission, and light absorption due to gap materials by using a light-reactive organic resin to selectively arrange gap materials on a light shielding layer in a liquid crystal display panel. CONSTITUTION:A solution prepared by dispersing ball-shaped gap materials, columnar gap materials 3, or the like in a resin hardened by ultraviolet rays or a photoresist is applied on a counter substrate 1 by roll coating, spin coating, printing, or the like, and this substrate is subjected to prebaking and is exposed through a prescribed exposure mask and is developed and printed. By this stage, gap materials 3 are selectively adhered onto a light shielding layer 2. An organic high polymer layer or an inorganic high polymer layer is formed on a pair of obtained substrates and is subjected to the rubbing treatment, and a twisted nematic liquid crystal is enclosed in vacuum after pressuring and adhering seal peripheries to obtain an active matrix liquid crystal panel. Thus, an apparent aperture rate is improved to obtain pictures which have a high contrast ratio and are superior in color purity.
