    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for detecting 2D liquid crystal cell parameter wherein, with a simple configuration, such parameters as thickness of a liquid crystal layer at a plurality of points of a liquid crystal cell, kink angle in orientation of liquid crystal molecule, etc., are detected at the same time with precision in a short time. SOLUTION: The light from a light source 1 is allowed to pass a polarizing plate 3, a liquid crystal cell 4, and a polarizing plate 5, and transmission light intensity of the liquid crystal cell 4 at a plurality of points is measured with photo-detector 7. Transmission light intensity of the liquid crystal cell 4 at a plurality of points is measured when polarizing direction of the polarizing plate 5 is X-axis direction, when it is Y-axis direction, when it forms 45 deg. with the X-axis and Y-axis, or when a 1/4 wavelength 6 is so inserted between the polarizing plate 5 and the liquid crystal cell 4 that its axis direction is tilted by 45 deg. against the polarizing direction of the polarizing plate 5 while the polarizing direction of the polarizing plate 5 forms 45 with the X-axis and Y-axis. Stokes' parameter, at a plurality of points, of the liquid crystal cell 4 is obtained from a measured value, and from the obtained Stoke' parameter of the liquid crystal cell 4 at a plurality of points, thickness of a liquid crystal layer, at a plurality of points, of the liquid crystal cell 4 and a kink angle of orientation of liquid crystal molecule are obtained at the same time.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the need for a rubbing treatment and to obtain a uniform and good orientation characteristic even with a large-area substrate by a simple stage by applying liquid crystals by a roller or blade on the surface of a film for orientation deposited the substrate while allowing the liquid crystals to flow in one direction, holding the substrate for a prescribed period of time and forming a liquid crystal oriented layer. SOLUTION: While the roller 1 is lightly pressed onto the film 5 for orientation, the roller is driven in an arrow X direction, and while the roller 1 is kept rotated in an arrow R direction, the roller is rolled on the substrate 3 deposited with the film 5 for orientation. The liquid crystals 10 on the front side of the roller flow in the arrow direction X, by which the liquid crystal coating layer 9 is formed in the state of the liquid crystal molecules heading this flow direction. Similarly, the liquid crystal coating layer 9 is formed even if the blade is moved while its front end is pressed. The comparison made between the roller 1 and the blade reveals that the roller 1 less flaws the film 5 for orientation, allows the industrial utilization thereof and is high in productivity. The coating by the roller 1 is thus superior.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal cell parameter detecting method and device capable of detecting liquid crystal cell parameters such as the thickness of a liquid crystal layer, a twisted angle in the orientation of liquid crystal molecules in a short time with high accuracy with simple constitution. SOLUTION: The polarization direction of a polarizing plate 4 is made to an X-axis direction and an liquid crystal cell 3 is rotated at a position where the transmission intensity of light passing through the liquid crystal 3 becomes an extreme value (the maximum value or the minimum value) and the transmission intensity Ix at that time is measured. Then, transmission intensities Iy, I45, Iq45 being respective intensities at the time when the polarization direction of the plate 4 is made to a Y-axis direction, at the time when the polarization direction of the plate 4 is made to form the angle of 45 degrees with the X-axis and the Y-axis and at the time when a quaterwave plate 5 is inserted between the plate 4 and the liquid crystal cell 3 while the axial direction of the plate 5 is inclined by 45 degrees with respect to the polarization direction of the plate 4 in the state that the polarization direction of the plate 4 is made to form the angle of 45 degrees with the X-axis and the Y-axis are measured. Then, a Stokes parameter is calculated based on the respective measured values Ix, Iy, I45, Iq45 and the thickness of a liquid crystal layer and a twisted angle in the orientation of liquid crystal molecules or the like are calculated based on the calculated Stokes parameter.
