    • A power saving method in a mobile communication system is provided to maximize the effectiveness of power saving by indicating the sleep interval value of a mobile station more detailedly when packet data, supplied to a base station, are delayed. Detecting that packet data are supplied from an upper node, a base station confirms how many times packet data have been supplied from the beginning packet data(602). When the currently supplied packet data are the fifth, the base station calculates 'I(n)', the difference between the supplied time point of the fourth packet data and the supplied time point of the fifth packet data(604). And then the base station judges whether a mobile station is in sleep mode(606). If not, the base station calculates 'LA(n)', the longterm average of packet data arrival intervals(608). Also the base station calculates 'SA(n)', the shortterm average of packet data arrival intervals(610). And then the base station judges whether a MOB_SLP-REQ(Mobile Sleep Request) message is received from the mobile station(612). If the MOB_SLP-REQ message is received, the base station confirms whether VxLA(n) is larger than SA(n), wherein V is a value to determine the range of a variance equivalent to a positive number of LA(n)(614). If so, the base station determines an SI(Sleep Interval) value as a value of LA(n) and transmits a MOB_SLP-RSP containing the determined SI value to the mobile station(616,620).

    • A power-saving method in a wireless communication apparatus is provided to prevent a waste of power, which is generated during a listening period having fixed length, by grasping the start and end time of data transmission/reception in an upper layer and actively executing mode transfer. An upper layer, if data to be transmitted is generated, provides a wake trigger(trigger_1) to a MAC layer(S301). If the MAC layer gets out of a sleep mode in response to the wake trigger, a terminal transmits a bandwidth request message to a base station. If the base station allocates a resource in response to the bandwidth request message, the terminal executes data transmission/reception through the allocated resource. In case data to be transmitted is not generated during an appointed time, the upper layer transmits a sleep mode entry trigger(trigger_2) to the MAC layer(S302). Based on the sleep mode entry trigger, the MAC layer transmits a MOB_SLP_REQ message to the base station(S303). If a MOB_SLP_RSP message is received from the base station(S304), the terminal enters into the sleep mode.
