    • A mold assembly (10) for blow molding plastic articles (4) is provided having an upper mold member (12), a lower mold member (14) and a lower support member (16). The lower mold member (14) is preferably a relatively lightweight plate having a generally centrally located molding cavity (30) matingly matched with an upper molding cavity (20) in the upper mold member (12). The lower mold member (14) is moved horizontally and optionally vertically beneath an extrusion head (H) as a molten parison (P) is extruded. The lower mold member(14) is then transported to, and positioned within, the lower support member (16). The upper mold member (12) is then closed over the lower mold member (14) and lower support (16) to close the mold assembly (10). The molten parison (P) is then expanded in the mold cavity (20,30). After the molding operation, the plastic part (4) may be removed and the lower mold member (14) may be cooled by immersion in a cooling fluid. The apparatus to move the lower mold member (14) during extrusion of the parison (P) and to the molding station may be a robotic arm (R). The lower mold member (14) is relatively lightweight so that it may be efficiently moved by the robot arm (R) while the necessary structural support is provided by the lower support member (16).

    • A mold for use in blow molding has a first fixture (12) and a second fixture (14). The fixtures (12,14) correspond to typical mold halves or portions. The first fixture (12) includes drive means (40), typically in the form of pins (46), while the second mold fixture has drive receiving means (66), typically in the form of holes (70), to receive the pins (46). When the second mold fixture (14) is in registration with the first mold fixture (12), the pins(46) or other drive means (40) are extended to lock and locate the two fixtures (12,14) together. Blow molding can then be carried out without the need of the typical blow molding presses. A method of blow molding involves the use of a robotic arm (84) to move the relatively lightweight second mold fixture (14) described above beneath an extrusion head (102) to accept a parison as it is being extruded so the parison is contained within the mold cavity (60). After extrusion is complete the arm (84) moves the second fixture (14) toward the first fixture so that the fixtures (14) can be located and locked together. A single robot (110) using a single extrusion head (102) can serve several mold stations depending upon cycle times.

    • A structural assembly includes a first member defining a matrix material, and a second member defining a skin. The skin has a roughed surface of hooks or barbs. The second member is engaged to the first member to define a mechanically interlocked assembly. The assembly may include an open-cell matrix material in a glue-less connection. The assembly may include a chemical bond in addition to a mechanical bond. The assembly may include internal layers of pre-impregnated composite fiber and resin. The skin member may act as a jig for a green composite member. The skin member may be deformed in a press to present a non-planar surface for such other members as may be attached to it. Assemblies may be formed with mechanical interconnection in place of glue or adhesive connections. Assemblies may be formed to make light, thin-walled pipe, flasks, pressure vessels and so forth.
