    • In a frictional stirring weld apparatus for bonding elements with a rotary tool, a head is movable with respect to the elements to position and orient the rotary tool so that a pin of the rotary tool is aligned along a boundary between first surfaces and a shoulder of the rotary tool faces to second surfaces extending radially outward from the first surfaces, and to generate a relative movement between the rotary tool and the elements along the second surfaces, and a compensating member is capable of holding thereon the rotary tool, at least partially rotatable on the rotational axis with respect to the head to rotate the rotary tool, and supported on the head movably along the rotational axis with respect to the head so that a positional relationship between the rotary tool and a combination of the elements is adjustable in a direction parallel to the rotational axis.

    • A fuel assembly comprises a plurality of fuel rods, tie plates for holding both ends of these fuel rods, and spacers which support these fuel rods. The spacer comprises a plurality of cells into which the fuel rods are inserted respectively, the adjacent cells being joined to each other at axial ends thereof, whereby a space between these cells being held or retained, and a plurality of loop springs held respectively on the cells. Each of the loop springs has a pair of resilient members which are located within the pair of adjacent cells and which urge the fuel rods in a radial direction, and a pair of connections which connect axial ends of the resilient members to each other. Each of the connections have a passage through which coolant flows axially and which is defined by a closed peripheral wall. The closed peripheral wall is not uniform in thickness. The pair of adjacent cells have at axial end portions of peripheral walls openings for accommodating or receiving the connections of the loop spring.

    • A friction stirring-welding method capable of increasing the welding strength of a lap joint. A welding tool (1) comprises a small diameter projected part (2) at the tip of a shoulder (3). The welding tool is press-fitted to the upper plate (4) of the lap joint while being rotated. By a friction stirring action, an upper plate side welding boundary surface (6) plastically flows, a surface oxidation film on a lapped surface is peeled off, and the boundary surface is activated to provide an excellent welding part. Also, since the welding tool is formed in a shape having the small diameter semispherical projected part (2) at the tip thereof, the thickness (12) of an upper plate welding part is increased, and a lap joint part with high welding strength can be provided.
