    • The present invention is directed to new, energy-efficient, photoinitiators having the following general formula: wherein of X1 is a conjugated system such as one or more aryl groups or substituted aryl groups; Z1 is —O, —S, an alkyl group having from one to six carbon atoms, an ester moiety, a ketone moiety, an amine moiety, an imine moiety, an ether moiety, an aryl or substituted aryl group, a metal or non-metal, or a metal or non-metal containing group, such as a zinc-containing group or a boron-containing group, respectively; and M1 is an alkyl group, a substituted alkyl group, or forms a five-member ring with Z1. The present invention is also directed to a method of generating a reactive species, which includes exposing one or more photoinitiators to radiation to form one or more reactive species. Also described are methods of polymerizing polymerizable materials, methods of curing an unsaturated oligomer/monomer mixture, and methods of laminating using the photoinitiators of the present invention. In addition, the present invention is directed to ink compositions, adhesive compositions and resins, and methods of printing using the above-described photoinitiators.

    • A surface-segregatable, melt-extrudable thermoplastic composition is provided which includes at least one thermoplastic polyolefin and at least one additive having the general formula, ##STR1## in which: (A) R.sub.1 -R.sub.9 are independently selected monovalent C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl groups; (B) R.sub.10 is hydrogen or a monovalent C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl group; (C) m represents an integer of from 1 to about 4; (D) n represents an integer of from 0 to about 3; (E) the sum of m and n is in the range of from 1 to about 4; (F) p represents an integer of from 0 to about 5; (G) x represents an integer of from 1 to about 10; (H) y represents an integer of from 0 to about 5; (I) the ratio of x to y is equal to or greater than 2; (J) the additive has a molecular weight of from about 350 to about 1,400; and (K) the additive is present in an amount of from about 0.5 to about 5 percent by weight, based on the amount of thermoplastic polyolefin. Melt-extrusion of the foregoing composition results in a wettable nonwoven web which remains wettable for at least two years at ambient temperature. A method of making such a wettable nonwoven web also is provided.

    • A method of preparing a laminate having increased peel strength and solvent resistance which involves (A) applying an adhesive composition to a surface of a first sheet; (B) exposing the adhesive composition on the surface of the first sheet to incoherent, pulsed ultraviolet radiation from a dielectric barrier discharge excimer lamp; (C) bringing a surface of a second sheet in contact with the adhesive composition-bearing surface of the first article; and (D) allowing the adhesive composition to cure. The incoherent, pulsed ultraviolet radiation has a single narrow wavelength band within the range of from about 260 to about 360 nanometers. The adhesive composition includes from about 94 to about 60 percent by weight of a cycloaliphatic diepoxide, from about 1 to about 10 percent by weight of a cationic photoinitiator, and from about 5 to about 30 percent by weight of a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate-vinyl alcohol terpolymer, all based on the weight of adhesive composition. The sheets desirably are films and nonwoven webs composed of cellulosic fibers, polyolefin fibers, or a mixture of cellulosic fibers and polyolefin fibers. The method is particularly well suited for the preparation of such laminates as industrial wipers, workwear, medical fabrics, and the like.
