    • A rotor includes a shaft; a permanent magnet layer; and a retainer comprising a conductive, low magnetic permeability material bound to the rotor shaft. The permanent magnet layer is semi-restricted between the shaft and the retainer. In one embodiment, the magnet layer includes a molded ring magnet. In another embodiment, the magnet layer includes a plurality of magnet segments which can be situated on the rotor in rotor pockets or in a rotor cage. The bond between the retainer and the rotor can be enabled by a cap or by support elements. A high conductivity material can be situated over the retainer with the combination of the retainer and the high conductivity material having a resistivity high enough to minimize space harmonic losses and low enough to minimize time harmonic losses. The high conductivity material can also be applied to induction rotors for excluding high frequency components while permitting penetration of low frequency torque producing fields.

    • A seal assembly that seals a gap formed by a groove comprises a seal body, a biasing element, and a connection that connects the seal body to the biasing element to form the seal assembly. The seal assembly further comprises a concave-shaped center section and convex-shaped contact portions at each end of the seal body. The biasing element is formed from an elastic material and comprises a convex-shaped center section and concave-shaped biasing zones that are opposed to the convex-shaped contact portions. The biasing element is adapted to be compressed to change a width of the seal assembly from a first width to a second width that is smaller than the first width. In the compressed state, the seal assembly can be disposed in the groove. After release of the compressing force, the seal assembly expands. The contact portions will move toward a surface of the groove and the biasing zones will move into contact with another surface of the groove. The biasing zones will bias the contact portions of the seal body against the surface of the groove.

    • A blower unit which, in one embodiment, includes an elongate main mounting member, a stator, a fan subassembly, and a blower housing, is described. In the one embodiment, the elongate main mounting member is the main structural member of the unit. The stator includes a stator core and stator windings, and the stator is secured to the main mounting member. The fan subassembly includes a rotor and a plurality of vanes. The rotor includes a substantially cylindrical iron ring and a magnetic portion having a substantially cylindrical shape. The magnetic portion is secured within the inner diameter of the iron ring and defines a rotor bore. The stator is located in the rotor bore and is concentric with respect to the rotor. The rotor is coupled to the plurality of vanes so that the vanes rotate with the rotor. The fan subassembly also includes bearing assemblies which are spring biased toward, and into rotatable engagement with, the elongate main mounting member. The fan assembly further includes a shroud for partially enclosing the plurality of vanes.
