    • Disclosed herein is an image processing method for producing enhanced halftone edges, particularly suited to those edges which only lie upon the background as apposed to those edges which abut other halftone screens. It utilizes a step of defining border pixels and a step of halftoning those border pixels in a different manner than the halftoning applied to the interior region of the tint or image segment. The preferred halftone for the border pixels will be related to the interior halftone by some number of common spatial frequency harmonics. Examples of common-harmonic screening for an edge include, but are not limited to: (a) same screen with different tone reproduction characteristics (boosted edge values); (b) same screen angles and frequencies with a different spot function, possibly phase shifted; (c) a dot screen whose frequency vectors can be generated by the frequency vectors of the interior screen; (d) a line screen whose frequency vectors can be generated by the frequency vectors of the interior screen. This generation process is directed to ensuring that the two screens will be “harmonically matched” where at least one of the fundamental frequency vectors and harmonics of the first screen will equal at least one of the fundamental frequency vectors and harmonics of the second screen.

The method further involves determining a ranking order of the first, second, third and fourth neighboring pixels by comparing pixel values of the first, second, third and fourth neighboring pixels, and diffusing error to at least one of the first, second, third and fourth neighboring pixels based on the determined ranking order of the first, second, third and fourth neighboring pixels.

    • Aspects of color of a halftoned image are controlled or adjusted. A method for adjustment can include determining a color description of a color of an area or window associated with a target halftoned pixel, determining a desired adjustment to the color associated with the target pixel, determining a color change value based on the desired adjustment and the color description associated with the target pixel, combining the color change value with at least one value of the target halftoned pixel, thereby generating at least one combined target pixel value and quantizing the at least one combined target pixel value. For instance error diffusion and/or rank-ordered error diffusion is used to perform the quantization. Color adjustments can be based on user preference and/or calibration compensations between original and target devices.

    • The teachings provided herein disclose a method for corner sharpening in the display of a bitmapped digital image. The method includes the steps of selecting a target pixel location within the digital image; observing a set of pixels within a pixel observation window superimposed on the digital image relative to the target pixel location; generating edge-state codes for a plurality of pairs of neighboring vectors of pixels within the pixel observation window; generating corner-identification codes from the plurality of edge-state codes using at least one look-up table so as to thereby identify corner pixels; and, assigning a pixel value in an output image plane in a location corresponding to the target pixel in the input image, such that assigned value extends a corner where indicated by a corner identification code, thereby producing a sharpening effect. The method may be used for improving the print quality of line-art corners and other fine details as found in both font and image data.
