    • A medical infusion pump (10) including an improved electric motor assembly (256). The medical infusion pump (10) includes a pumping mechanism (250) and a pump chamber (132) in an operative position with respect to the pumping mechanism (250), the pumping mechanism (250) manipulating the pump chamber (132) to pump liquid through the pump chamber. An electric motor (256) having a rotatable drive shaft (316) is operably linked to the pump driving mechanism (250) and the pump driving mechanism (250) pumps a select amount of liquid through the pump chamber (132) on each rotation of the electric motor drive shaft (316). The improved electric motor assembly (256) includes a motor having a portion of a drive shaft (388) extending therefrom. A magnet (392) is attached to the extending portion of the drive shaft for rotation with the drive shaft. A flux gatherer (396) is spaced from and magnetically coupled to the magnet (392) for biasing the poles of the magnet in a select orientation relative to the flux gatherer (396) so as to stop the pump driving mechanism (250) in a select position. A magnetic position detector (400) is spaced from and magnetically coupled to the magnet (392) for emitting an electrical signal each rotation of the drive shaft (388).

    • System and method for digitally generating a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal with dither based on a command signal, the signal having a pulse width proportional to the command signal. In the preferred embodiment, the PWM signal with proportional dither energizes a load, such as a variable force solenoid, with a desired electrical current. The system includes a base signal generator for generating a base signal having a pulse width which is based on a command signal representing the desired electrical current. The system also includes a dither signal generator for digitally generating a dither signal having a pulse width proportional to the command signal, and a summer for combining the base signal and the dither signal to obtain the pulse width modulated signal with proportional dither.

    • An ignition diagnostic monitor detects ignition malfunction. A first monostable multivibrator is coupled to an ignition module to receive the ignition signal and maintain a first logic state for a predetermined first time constant after detecting an ignition signal. The monostable multivibrator maintains a second logic level state after passage of the predetermined time constant until detection of another ignition signal occurs. The second logic level indicates a missed ignition signal and an ignition fault. A control module is coupled to the ignition module and the monostable multivibrator and receives a fault detection signal from the monostable multivibrator.

    • An improved drive for a magnetic data storage tape is described which features direct coupling of the tape from a machine to a file reel without interposition of vacuum buffers or spring loaded tension control devices. Control of the current supplied to motors driving the file and machine reels is performed by a microprocessor in response to information derived during an initialization routine performed at first mounting of a reel of tape upon the drive and in response to continuously generated velocity information generated by tachometers on the motor shaft. The absolute position of the tape can at all times be known to the microprocessor and the tension of the tape can be controlled by control of the supply of current to the motors. In a preferred embodiment, a solid state buffer memory is provided to accept data from a host computer during the time the tape drive comes up to speed. By use of the initialization routine to determine motor losses, windage, brush and bearing wear, and the moment of inertia of the motor/reel systems, and the instantaneous tachometer data, direct sensing of tape tension can be avoided, thus eliminating mechanical parts in favor of sophisticated electronic control means.

    • A compact and highly reliable proportioning pumping system for supplying a precise and controllable mixture of concentrate and water in a kidney dialysis machine comprises a central body and a pair of oppositely mounted pivotable linkages coupled to the body. A first pivotable linkage is coupled by connecting rods to a water metering piston and a concentrate metering piston respectively, a variable stroke ratio being provided by a signal actuated drive coupled to the linkage mechanism and controlling the relative position of the end of one of the connecting rods. The change of position is advantageously effected so as to maintain a precise proportionality between the flows delivered by each of the pistons throughout their variable stroke lengths. The range of proportioning adjustments can be mechanically limited and alarm conditions can readily be detected. Precise delivery of surge-free flows of liquid for subsequent mixing is enhanced by controlling flow through each piston with a fast-acting metering valve system. A bistable switching valve responsive to the limit positions of the first linkage mechanism controls an actuator piston to operate a second pivotable linkage mechanism to which the metering valves are coupled. The second linkage switches rapidly between two alternate valve positions, so that there is a minimum dead zone and both water and concentrate flows are precisely controlled.
