    • A disaster recovery system providing asynchronous remote data shadowing between a primary and a secondary site uses a pair of track arrays for each primary data storage device of a remote copy pair to monitor which record updates are in transit between the primary site and the secondary site. A host processor at the primary site of the disaster recovery system transfers a sequentially consistent order of copies of record updates to the secondary site for back-up purposes. The copied record updates are stored on the secondary data storage devices which form remote copy pairs with the primary data storage devices at the primary site. One track array, the active track array, is used to set elements according to which tracks on the primary data storage device receive record updates from the host processor at the primary site. The other track array, the recovery track array, designates which record updates comprise the copied record updates currently transferred from the primary site to the secondary site for data shadowing and is used for recovery should an error interrupt the transfer. The track arrays are toggled once the consistency group transfer completes, the recovery track array becoming the active track array and the active track array becoming the recovery track array.

    • A data storage system atomically suspends multiple duplex pairs across either a single storage subsystem or multiple storage subsystems. The duplex pairs are suspended such that the data on the secondary DASDs of the duplex pairs is maintained in a sequence consistent order. A host processor in the data storage system running an application generates records and record updates to be written to the primary DASDs of the duplex pairs. The storage controller directs copies of the records and record updates to the secondary DASDs of the duplex pairs. Sequence consistency is maintained on the secondary DASDs by quiescing the duplex pairs and then suspending the duplex pairs with change recording. Quiescing the duplex pairs allows any current write I/O in progress to complete to the primary DASD. The storage controller then locks out any subsequent write I/O from the host processor by raising a long busy signal to such subsequent write requests. Suspending the duplex pairs with change recording directs the storage controller to mark the physical address of the primary DASD which the application in the host processor updates between the time the duplex pair is suspended and then is reestablished.

    • A method in a data processing system for automatically terminating or resuming backup copy sessions after an abnormal interrupt or reset notification occurrence during a backup copy process. A status indication is entered into activity tables associated with a plurality of storage subsystems and devices within a data processing system in response to initiation of a backup copy session. Status indications are then entered upon successful completion of a backup copy session within the data processing system. The indications within the activity tables are reviewed to determine the status of a backup copy session upon restarting a resource manager, abnormal termination of a backup copy program, or an operating system initial program load. If a backup copy session has been initiated but not completed, the backup copy session is then terminated. The indications within the activity tables are also reviewed to determine the status of a backup copy session if a reset notification is raised by a storage subsystem. The tracks extents which are active for a volume associated with a particular session identification are determined. A comparison is then made between the tracks extents which are active and the volume and extent information associated with a physical session identification. If a match exists between the tracks extents which are active and the volume and extent information associated with a physical session identification, the backup copy session resumes. If a match does not exist, the backup copy session is terminated.

A mirror policy indicating volumes in a first storage system is processed to mirror to volumes in a second storage system and volumes in the second storage system to mirror to volumes in a third storage system.     • A database management system ensures consistency between primary and mirrored backup copies of a database, despite occurrence of a suspending condition interrupting the normal process of mirroring the primary database. One or more primary controllers are provided, each having a data storage unit with multiple primary data storage devices. Multiple secondary controllers each have multiple associated secondary data storage devices, each secondary controller being coupled to one primary controller. One or more primary databases reside on the primary devices, with a corresponding number of secondary databases residing on the secondary devices. Each secondary database mirrors a corresponding primary database. Either a host, attached to a primary controller, or one of the primary controllers itself, maintains a map cross-referencing each primary and secondary database with the primary and secondary devices containing portions thereof. If a predefined “suspending condition” affecting data mirroring occurs, the host or primary controller consults its map to identify all primary and secondary devices affected by the condition. Then, each primary controller stops all ongoing and future read/writes with each of its affected primary devices. Each primary controller also directs each secondary controller having an affected secondary device to stop mirroring the primary databases stored on that device. Then, the primary controller starts intermediate change recording and resumes read/writes with its primary devices. When the suspending condition ends, each primary controller applies the appropriate logged changes to its secondary database(s) and then reactivates each secondary database.
