    • In a biological sample grinding device and method, a bearing having a plurality of rolling elements disposed between a pair of rings is disposed in a container in which a fluid having at least one biological sample particle therein is introduced. With the bearing immersed in the fluid having the biological sample particle therein, one ring of the bearing is rotated relative to the other ring thereof, whereupon the rolling elements roll between the pair of rings and, in response thereto, the biological sample particle is drawn by the fluid between the pair of rings where it is subject to being crushed or ground between at least one of the rolling elements and at least one of the rings. A baffle can be disposed in the container for inhibiting the rotation of the fluid and, hence, the introduction of air into the fluid.

    • A stereo laparoscope for producing a stereoscopic optical image of an intracorporeal region comprises an elongate tubular casing having side walls in which an illuminating window and left and right observation windows are disposed. A single, elongate, image transmitting optical fiber bundle is disposed within the casing, as are light emitting fibers for illuminating the intracorporeal region through the illuminating window. Left and right images are collected from the observation windows and alternately passed along the casing to the fiber bundle by a relay means comprising objective lenses, mirrors, a polarizing beam splitter and an optical switch. The left and right images are carried one at a time by the fiber bundle to a video display means which displays them to a viewer. Optical valves provide that the left image is viewed by the viewer's left and the right image is view by the viewer's right eye, to thereby produce a stereoscopic optical image. The left and right images are displayed at a rate of alternation that is faster than the flicker-sensing limit of the human eye, resulting in flicker free viewing.

    • A capacitive uterine contraction sensor includes an insulating substrate, a first electrode disposed on one side of the substrate, and a second electrode positioned on the first side of the substrate in a spaced relation to the first electrode. The second electrode is configured to move toward or away from the first electrode. The sensor may also include a conductive standoff sandwiched between the substrate and the second electrode for maintaining the second electrode in spaced relation to the first electrode. The conductive standoff is electrically coupled to the second electrode and electrically isolated from the first electrode. Alternatively, the second electrode may include a spring mechanism used in conjunction with a standoff to maintain the second electrode in spaced relation to the first electrode. The spring mechanism is electrically isolated from the first electrode and enables the second electrode to move toward or away from the first electrode.

    • A diet watch includes a housing with an adjustable wristband attached thereto, at least one accelerometer disposed within the housing, a microcontroller disposed within the housing and operatively coupled to the accelerometer and a feedback device operatively coupled to the microcontroller. The accelerometer provides a signal indicative of an orientation of a user's hand in space. The microcontroller uses the signal from the at least one accelerometer to determine that a bite was taken by the user and starting a timer to countdown a preset time interval. The feedback device provides an indication to the user that another bite of food may be taken after the preset time interval has elapsed.

    • An extra-uterine sensing device for directly measuring changes in pressure brought about by uterine contractions of a wearer. The sensing device includes an outer member adapted for fixed attachment to the abdomen in an area of the wearer's uterus to establish a minimum pre-load and a sensor unit positioned between the outer member of the abdomen. The sensor unit includes a variable resistor formed of a pressure sensitive ink, a first electrically conductive member interfacing with the ink and a second electrically conductive member interfacing with the ink and spaced from the first electrically conductive member and a device attached to the first and second electrically conductive members to monitor changes in the electrical resistance. Also disclosed is an extra-uterine method of sensing uterine contractions of a wearer having a fundus including attaching a sensing device of the type described to the abdomen in the area of the wearer's uterus creating a minimum pre-load on the sensing device sufficient to establish the reference level for instantaneously detecting changes in pressure caused by contractions, non-mechanically and directly converting a change in pressure to a change in electrical resistance and converting the change in resistance to a non-decaying electrical signal and monitoring the electrical signal.
