    • A fatigue crack growth retardant material for application to aluminum and alloys thereof utilizes certain organic nitrogen compounds and an elastomeric polymer compatible herewith with respect to the curing properties thereof as well as the ultimate properties of the material and capable of stabilizing the nitrogen compound so as to inhibit the evaporation thereof to the atmosphere. The material inhibits corrosion of and retards crack growth in aluminum and alloys thereof when applied thereto. The material has particular utility when applied to the surfaces of structural parts of aircraft and is utilized as a protective coating as well as a sealant, dependent upon the amount of solvent added to the polymeric elastomer.

    • The specification discloses a novel method for controlling production processes of a pneumatic, electrical or hydraulic nature and apparatus therefor. The method, and therefore the apparatus for performing said method, counteracts any process change by utilizing the error difference and the rate of change of the error difference between a feedback signal related to a current condition of the process and a desired value related to the desired condition of the process.The error difference and rate of change and then utilized to produce a correction signal which is adapted to remain unchanged as long as the process being controlled, and the desired value signal, both remain in static condition, but which also has a unique look ahead feature such that said correction signal attempts to become saturated as soon as a new desired value is supplied, or a process change occurs. The correction signal, if saturated, is brought out of saturation much faster by using both the rate of change of the actual error difference between said desired value and said feedback signals and the actual error difference between said signals in a manner which is much faster than if only the error difference was used. If said correction signal never does reach a saturation point, or if it is saturated, upon becoming unsaturated, the correction signal is then changed much faster than previously possible by using the rate of change of the error difference, rather than the error difference only.

    • A fitting for insertion of an elongated member, such as a semirigid rod, axially into the end of a live gas main section. The fitting comprises a housing defining a passageway opening which extends axially through the housing. The housing provides, at its opposite ends, exterior and interior openings. The housing is mounted on the main end with the interior opening sealingly engaging and in coaxial registry with the main end. The housing further provides a channel extending generally transaxially of the fitting between the exterior and interior openings. Two closure members are disposed in the channel and are selectively movable therein for increasing and decreasing the size of the passageway opening. The closure members include cooperating gate members and gaskets which define an aperture extending axially of the fitting. The gaskets provide a perimetral seal for the aperture. The aperture has a cross section substantially equal to the cross section of the elongated member. The cooperating gate members and gaskets seal the main end when the elongated member is inserted through the exterior and interior openings and into the main end and the closure members are closed about it. The fitting and semirigid rod are primary apparatus used in inserting a smaller diameter, high pressure plastic gas main into the live gas main. Grease chambers, wire feeds and nipples of various types are used in combination with the fitting to carry out the insertion of the smaller diameter main.
