    • A grain drill row unit includes a furrow opening device that opens a furrow into which seeds are deposited as the machine advances, and a combination gauge and press wheel rides along the ground behind the furrow opening device to firm the soil around the seed and to control the depth at which the furrow opening device operates. A paddle type scraping wheel is rotatably mounted on a support above the gauge wheel axis, the scraper wheel having edges at the outer ends of the paddles, generally parallel to the axis of the scraper wheel but angled relative to the axis of the gauge wheel, the scraper wheel edges engaging material on the periphery of the gauge wheel and being rotated by contact with said material so that the scraper wheel edges scrape the periphery of the gauge wheel.

    • A partial width seeding attachment includes electronically controlled solenoids which activate hydraulic flow control valves connected to the hydraulic cylinders on respective implement sections. Switches in the tractor cab control the rockshaft of one or more selected sections independently of the other sections to raise the openers on the selected section or sections from contact with the soil. An electronically activated flow reversing valve is connected between the source of hydraulic fluid under pressure and the lift cylinder for each of the sections. Activation of a selected valve after the selective control valve on the tractor is moved to the normal field working position pressurizes the side of the cylinder that raises the openers on the section. The remaining cylinders operate normally to maintain preselected down pressure on the other openers. A master raise switch provides implement lift independent of the position of the individual rockshaft control switches. A latching relay connected to a momentary on switch prevents valve operation without manual switch movement after a power interruption.

    • A depth gauging adjustment mechanism includes a spring-loaded handle which pivots about a common axis with the depth gauging wheel arm on an opener assembly. The handle has two transversely located pins, and the back of the opener assembly has notches on a radius struck on the axis for receiving the pins. The wheel arm and thus the planting depth are maintained by the handle. Each handle position represents a different planting depth which can be adjusted easily with one hand by pulling the handle against the bias, repositioning the pins and then releasing the handle. The wheel arm is freely rockable downwardly from the depth adjusted position to facilitate handle movement when the opener assembly is raised from the ground-working position.

    • An improved furrow closing mechanism for a seed planting apparatus including an apparatus for adjusting the distance between furrow closing wheels to correspond to adjustments in the size of the furrow being formed. The wheels are mounted on an axle assembly and this axle assembly includes an axle shaft having reduced first and second portions on each end thereof. A bearing is disposed on the outermost reduced section of each end of the axle shaft and a seal is disposed on an inner adjacent reduced section of each of the ends of such axle shaft. Adjustments to the distance between the soil contacting portions of the closing wheels are made by utilizing spacers corresponding to the distance for which it is desired to space the wheels outwardly from the position they would be in if no spacers were used.
