A drawing guide that includes an active and/or inactive drawing guide is rendered by displaying a shaded drawing guide and the active drawing guide in response to detecting ink strokes within the drawing guide. The active drawing guide can comprise a bounding rectangle encompassing a drawing area that receives ink strokes.

    • Automatic detection and switching between computer-enabled input modes is provided. An automatic switching input mode may be selected that allows input modes to be automatically switched from one mode to another based on user behavior. If a user's computer system is in selection mode (keyboard or mousing device), the user may enter and manipulate data via mouse movement or keyboard selection. If the user moves an electronic pen to the user's computer display screen, her computer system automatically switches to pen input mode without the requirement that the user manually switch to pen mode. Subsequently, if the user moves her mousing device or selects a key on her keyboard, her system automatically switches back to selection mode. Additionally, one input mode may be readily latched for operation as a different input mode. For example, a user may latch a pen input mode for operation as a mouse input mode. Conversely, a mouse input mode may be latched for operation as a pen input mode. Each input mode may be easily switched back to its natural state based on user behavior.

    • The present invention provides a method and system for tapping to create document structure, such as writing. A tapping gesture received from the user is interpreted by a writing application to indicate that the user is about to write in a certain location on the page. While in pen mode, the user taps the pen, the gesture recognizer tells the writing application that a “tap” has occurred, and the writing application creates a new paragraph with an active writing guide attached to it at that location. A tap below text creates a new paragraph. The new paragraph may be located at any available indent level depending on the location of the tap. The tapping gesture may also be used for clearing or moving selections.

    • Architecture for emphasizing changes in collaborative or shared documents. A user can now quickly see what content was changed (hence, unread content) since the last time the user viewed the document or page. A tool automatically tracks and annotates the new content and author of the content for collaboration users. The architecture provides author highlighting on a page or document, which is turned on automatically when the user goes to the page or document. Widgets are displayed in association with the unread content that indicate which user authored all or portions of new unread content. Synchronization of the content update document content so that other users can readily see what is new and the author. A master file is created that stores the emphasis information and associated author information. The file can be stored at any location that is accessibly by the collaborative clients.
