    • The gas from combustion or gasification of fossil fuel contains flyash and other particulate. The flyash is separated from the gas in a plurality of standleg moving granular-bed filter modules. Each module includes a dipleg through which the bed media flows into the standleg. The bed media forms a first filter bed having an upper mass having a first frusto-conical surface in a frusto-conical member at the entrance to the standleg and a lower mass having a second frusto-conical surface of substantially greater area than the first surface after it passes through the standleg. A second filter media bed may be formed above the first filter media bed. The gas is fed tangentially into the module above the first surface. The flyash is captured on the first frusto-conical surface and within the bed mass. The processed gas flows out through the second frusto-conical surface and then through the second filter bed, if present. The bed media is cleaned of the captured flyash and recirculated to the moving granular bed filter. Alternatively, the bed media may be composed of the ash from the combustion which is pelletized to form agglomerates. The ash flows through the bed only once; it is not recycled.

    • A filtering apparatus for separating particulate matter from a gas stream. The filtering apparatus has a pressure vessel defining an interior chamber having a dirty gas inlet opening and a clean gas exit opening. A tubesheet is coupled within the pressure vessel thereby dividing said pressure vessel into a dirty gas side and a clean gas side. A support pipe for supporting a plenum chamber within the pressure vessel dirty gas side is securely coupled with the tubesheet. The plenum chamber for supporting a plurality of filter elements is coupled to the support pipe. The plenum chamber has a side wall having at least one dirty gas port and clean gas exit formed therein. The side wall further defines a clean gas chamber. A plurality of filter element guides are securely coupled within the clean gas chamber for supporting at least one filter element and preventing filter elements from moving laterally. A removable dirty gas port coupler for providing a particulate barrier seal between the dirty gas port and the plenum clean gas chamber is provided. A filter element support plate for supporting a filter element within the clean gas chamber is securely coupled adjacent the dirty gas port. The filter element support plate has at least one slot which is aligned coaxially with at least one of the plenum chamber dirty gas ports.

    • A hot gas cleanup system for removing particulates, alkali and sulfur from fuel gas produced by the gasification of coal in a gasifier, especially in an integrated gas turbine gasification power plant. A calcium based sulfur sorbent and an alkali sorbent are injected directly into the fuel gas and then recovered, along with the used sorbent, in a high efficiency, high temperature ceramic barrier filter. The fuel gas is then subjected to further de-sulfurization in a polishing de-sulfurizer supplied with a copper based sulfur sorbent. The used copper based sorbent is regenerated in fluidized bed regenerator. The regenerated sorbent is returned to the polishing de-sulfurizer and sulfur dioxide produced by the regeneration is directed to an oxidizer to which the used and unused sulfur sorbent from the filter is supplied so that the sulfur dioxide can be captured and so that the used sulfur sorbent can be converted to a more stable form for disposal.

    • A moving granular bed filter for removing contaminants from a gas or vapor stream employs a quantity of granular media that is passed through a vessel while the contaminant-laden gas stream is passed through the granular media to remove at least a portion of the contaminants from the gas stream and into the granular media. The vessel includes a media inlet that extends between a pair of opposite regions of the vessel and delivers the granular media into the interior of the vessel such that the granular media forms a freely-formed filtration pile within the interior of the vessel to define first and second chambers above the upper surface of the pile and on opposite sides of the media inlet. In one embodiment, the media inlet is disposed at the lower end of a media delivery channel that extends downwardly into the interior of the vessel and which supplies the granular media to the media inlet. In the same embodiment, the vessel additionally includes a gas flow direction plate disposed within the media and extending between the pair of opposite regions of the vessel to direct the flow of the gas stream both concurrent and then counter-current with the flow of the granular media through the vessel. In another embodiment, the vessel does not include the gas flow direction plate. In still another embodiment, the media delivery channel may include a flared skirt that forms the media inlet.     • A method and apparatus for cooling of hot waste gases using a jetting bed, fluidized bed technique. A nozzle or plurality of nozzles inject the hot waste gases upwardly into a bed of solid particulate material contained in a housing, with the jet of hot gases fluidizing the bed and being dissipated therein without substantially disturbing the surface of the bed of solids. With use of a horizontally extending bed, a plurality of nozzles are spaced such that the jets of hot waste gases do not impinge upon one another. With use of a vertically extending housing, a single jet of hot waste gases may be used. The hot solids in the enclosure may be removed therefrom, cooled and returned, or heat transfer tubes may be provided in the housing, out of the area of contact of hot waste gases, to remove heat therefrom.

    • A system and method for generating power having an air compression/partial oxidation system, a turbine, and a primary combustion system. The air compression/partial oxidation system receives a first air stream and a fuel stream and produces a first partially oxidized fuel stream and a first compressed air stream therefrom. The turbine expands the first partially oxidized fuel stream while being cooled by the first compressed air stream to produce a heated air stream. The heated air stream is injected into the expanding first partially oxidized fuel stream, thereby reheating it in the turbine. A second partially oxidized fuel stream is emitted from the turbine. The primary combustion system receives said second partially oxidized fuel stream and a second air stream, combusts said second partially oxidized fuel stream, and produces rotating shaft power and an emission stream therefrom.
